Default Those of you following the Instagram purchase by Facebook...

Don't get me wrong... if it was my idea... I'd be all good with it. But $1,000,000,000.00 (That's One Billion dollars) for a company that, on their own website says:

--

How will you make money?

We believe that the core of our product will always be free. There will be opportunities for consumers to buy extra add-ons like special filters, etc. However, we plan to experiment with different models as we grow and learn what special value we can provide to the community to make their collective experience more engaging, exciting and useful.

--

Tell me, how do you get to that kind of money with a profit model like that?

Sure ... like Google offering a boatload of free applications to keep any given user coming back. The whole idea is to develop a very narrowly defined profile of the user from any and all aspects of their life. That profile becomes extremely valuable to 3rd parties that pay handsomely for the opportunity to effective market a product.

This is what is tracking you whenever you come onto THT ... they track what topic appeals to you, what doesn't, what you respond to, ... :

Lotame
Google Analytics
Collarity
Comscore Beacon
VigLink

See that first line, 'No social networks found here' ... these days it is rare that Facebook and Twitter trackers are not included in the list. Give 'em time, they'll show up here, too. Btw, have you ever considered how IB makes money from their various "free" forums on the internet?

Fwiw, the $1-billion price tag is about 5-times what the company is thought to be worth.

It's the 'privacy suite' plugin for the FireFox browser. The other plugin is 'better privacy' -- it kills a few things that slip past privacy suite.

LOL. I'm not planning on it. As long as it doesn't turn out to be another Google. $99 and I didn't do it. LOL.

Like previously mentioned Facebook tracks EVERYTHING. A lot of people are leaving Facebook for Instagram (while browsing) and not going back. Mark Zuckerburg has proven he is no fool. Why would he let Instagram get a little too big for their britches?

IMO they're shooting themselves in the foot with the new timeline and it will not be around for long.

I've been a long time evernote user. It is one of those apps I've paid $5 a month for that had literally saved me thousands just by organizing my information.

By boat batteries, put it in evernote.
Battery goes bad. Hmm, when did I buy that battery, oh and there is my receipt.

Didn't Instagram close a funding round at a $500mil valuation just before Facebook bought them? What an incredible deal for Instagram to go from a $500mil to a $1bil company overnight.

I love Evernote as well, though I still don't use it as much as I should. I'd probably switch to them permanently if I could find a way to move my Delicious bookmarks to Evernote while importing the pages contents into the note.
