Default Anyone have kids in youth hockey in Florida?

I was wondering if anyone her had kids in youth hockey in Florida. Wife wants me to check into what the hockey situation is like. We had some friends move to Fort Myers and it has good fights for me to work etc. What areas would you recommend someone looking into for good schools, hockey, fishing/water sports. Wife likes to shop and likes a little bit of city life and is very into fashon- a little on the high maintenance side. For some reason I have been more attracted to the Gulf side, don't know why but I always thought there were less sharks. Can anybody lead me to some good areas too look at?

My family moved to the Tampa area when I was a kid in 1991. I was 12 at the time and told them that I would not go unless there was hockey there. Well, oddly enough there was (is). The lightning came to the NHL and the area in 1993 and it has only gotten better since.

When we moved to the Tampa area there was only one rink, then another, and then a twin rink, etc...

There's waaaaay too much info for a post. PM me and I'll let you know whatever I can..

RDV Center in Maitland (Orlando suburb) has a Youth Hockey program and two rinks. They also have adult leagues and drop in games.

My son played in the Clearwater area for several years. He now plays in an adult league and ref's for a part time college job. Most of the larger areas have hockey now. All of the rinks that I know of have nearly all levels of hockey from beginner up to travel teams for most ages. I stopped coaching a few years ago when my work schedule got too busy.

Plenty of great youth hockey in Fla.

Both east and west coast, Tampa and Orlando area. High school programs well organized also. Plenty of kids going on to next level.
Rangers just signed a player who started Panthers youth program.

My friends son was on a league in Broward County.... They just sent him to a private hockey school in Minnesota - Best in the country they say.... He is ranked very high .....

If you have any questions about Florida Hockey I could put u in touch with him - he will know everything for sure.... They are Canadian BTW

I coached youth hockey for 8 years in south florida and has definately lost a lot of participation down here. Most of the hockey kids I coached moved to lacrosse. We had a great team where we won 68 games in a row. I think the economy had a big effect as well as the Panthers doing terrible in that period of time.

My son played ice for 8 years in Palm Beach Gardens. My daughter is into it sometimes but she plays roller.

Roller is easier in my area since there is a public rink at one of the parks.

I love this pic of her. Notice the puck in the net and count the opposing players.
