Default Thinking About Onstar

So my trial Onstar ran out a while ago and I have kicked around the idea of reactivating it but it is 300 bucks which seems ridiculous. I have a smart phone (maybe too smart) and built in navigation which has a lot of things but there are times where is might be nice to hit the button and get the directions. The other reason i like the idea of it would be for my fiance and dad. While my fiance drives it occasionally it would be nice to have something in case of an emergency since she may or may not have her phone on her all the time. My old man also drives it some when he want to pull something heavy or if he just had his truck detailed so his doesn't get dirty. While he can drive well he has some health issues that would make it tough to dial a phone if something happened.

My real question is, do you have it, subscribe to it, or use it? Is it worth the money if you do?

I have never paid for it after the trial period. Too expensive - like $30/month

If the cost was $10/month they would likely increase revenue by 10x

I had it and the only thing I used it for was the phone feature a few times. Actually renewed for 1 or 2 years, but with cell phones and GPS I don't really see the need other then if you have a crash.

Shortly after the car went out of warranty it broke anyway, so that was the end of that.

It is not remotely close to worth the money to me. Maybe at $50 per year.

They have a $10 per month plan....if you have one lockout, it pays for itself.

I don't use the cellular piece though....too expensive.

I was under the impression it will call you in the car if the air bags deploy, if you do not reply or reply you need help they will contact the local police, ambulance and dispatch to your location based on the GPS info they have from the vehicle. None of my cars have it but if they did I would not think twice about spending $300 a year for this.

Yes they do notify the authorities if the bags deploy after they attempt you in the car first. Also a big plus for their service if your vehicle is stolen in conjunction with he police they will give the location of the vehicle and if the police are following it or chasing it they can slow it down and stop it, so that is worth it in my opinion but some people have complained that it monitors too much of the vehicle.

My sentiments exactly!

With onstar they know exactly where you are, how fast you are going, what radio station you are listening to, even the weight of the person in the passenger seat. What little benefit the system may provide is heavily outweighed by the gross misuse available to the gubment and 3rd party solicitors.

They want to charge you 300 bucks to reactivate? That's crazy. They are desperate to keep customers.

I call about once a year and tell them I'm ready to cancel. They then beg me to stay and give me a promotional offer for another year and drops the bill to 12 bucks a month with the turn by turn and the safe and sound package. It's worth it to me for 12 bucks a month. I tried to update my maps on my tom tom GPS the other day and they wanted 120 bucks for the new maps. I thought it was pretty crazy and made sense to me to keep the on star. (even though I hate the big brother stuff)

I resubscribed to the cheaper plan just for piece of mind. The discount I get from my insurance provider pays for half of that, so for $60 bucks or so it's worth having.
