I've seen dredge barges up here moved pretty much the same way. Last winter, I saw a trackhoe moving open-top rail cars on a siding- drop the bucket in one, move the bucket, raise it, drop in the next car, etc.

Doesn't seem very efficient, though it works. If I was the operator I would be throwing up from all the spinning back and forth.

There was a recent Bering Sea Gold mining TV show where a large back hoe was used for that purpose on a barge when the main propulsion wasn't working.

I thought thats how everyone does it when your pushboat loses the motor

notice the machine had no cab or ROPS
