Default amzon fire vs. Ipad vs. Nook

Need to get a tablet for e-mail for bus travel. really do not need a laptop, just a tablet for e-mail. Ipad is just too much to spend for somethign that I'll use just to surf the net and e-mail while traveling.

Amazon Fire seems to be the way to go, much less than an Ipad and seems to be user friendly, but what "hidden" fees and application fees are there with watching movies and games or is it like Ipad where you just buy what you want and go from there.

Not all that impressed with Nook, mainly due to the barnes and noble relationship.

Any thoughts/recommendations.

I would lean toward the iPad. You say you only want email, but when you see all you can do with the iPad, those extras will creep into your "requirements".

Fire is just more limited and not mainstream. I think you'd kick yourself 2 months downstream if you get the Kindle Fire.

That's me anyhow and my gadgeteer rating is very high.

You originally stated just for email, but the concern was about additional costs of watching movies??? haha

If you really want it for reading books, email, new articles...etc. The Kindle fire will do just fine, and the additional costs will be hard to justify, but if you really think you'll want to watch movies on it (and we all end up doing that)...then you probably would be happier in the long run spending the extra cash up front.

I'm going to have to agree on the iPad. I've had mine for about three months and I use it incessantly. Like capecuddy said, once you learn what it can do, you can be very productive with it!

You are just ringing the Apple-holic and Apple-retard dinner bell. They will come out of the woodwork in droves.

9 out of 10 people will tell you to get the IPad for no other reason than its just an IPad. Keep an open mind about it and buy whatever is best. Not everyone demands a Lexus for daily commuting. Google reviews.

Note my Droid 1.0 had features that weren't available until IPhone 4, yet cost less than the IPhone. Go figure....

I can't say that statement is accurate. I (and many others I know) buy apple because they are awesome to use and play with but that was NOT the main selling point for me. Apples customer service is second to none! You can NOT get better CS anywhere else. Every time I have EVER had a problem I walk in... tell them whats going on and they hand me a NEW(NOT REFURBISHED) device with no questions asked. Its always new straight out of the box. I even dropped my phone overboard one time and went in and told them and they said it wasn't a big problem and guess what... I got a new one for free. Same thing goes for my sister...she dropped her 1 week old new iphone..busted the screen... and went in there to try and get it fixed...expecting to pay...guess what.. she got a new one for free. If you don't care about CS then go with whoever suites you best...for me apple's product didn't sell me...it was their CS. But lets not get twisted.... their stuff is top notch also. Its win win

I bought and downloaded a book yesterday to my Nook, which I don't use anymore but then also downloaded for free the same book and my whole library to my I-Pad and PC.
While reading the book on the I-pad you can surf, email, check the weather, visit THT. I would have say an I-Pad or Droid tablet which would do the same thing, over a reading tablet.

I have an iPad, and one of my employees has a kindle fire... I played around with it, and other than being unfamiliar with the UI (it didn't do much for me in the intuitive category anyhow) it performed most things well. Movies were good, the reading, of course, was fine, and web browsing was also quite good.

I prefer my iPad for the large range of apps, more storage (I have a ton of music and video on my 64GB iPad) the Mac experience, and I personally like Apple's enclosed "sandbox"; no viruses, minimal glitches, best app store out there, and with me having an iPhone and a Mac desktop, it fits into the rest of my workflow.

If you are unencumbered by other Apple products, then you should look at the other choices. Take the Fire and Nook for a spin at some local stores if you can.

Got a fire for Christmas for the house. We use it for email, video, cooking, web surfing, reading. Love it.

I own an iPhone and a Kindle Fire. My two brother-in-laws attend the Church of Steve Jobs and therefore have iPads. I buy whatever works best for me and am not loyal to any particular brand like many of the Apple people. I laughed when my brother-in-law convinced my mother-in-law to pay $ 2,500 for an Apple laptop so she could surf the internet. My Acer laptop cost me $ 499 and I surf just fine. Get what you need and not what other people want. My Kindle Fire does everything I want it to do. I regularly watch movies on it, do my email, read a book, magazine like Saltwater Sportsman or the Boston Globe on the commuter rail to Boston, etc. The Amazon Kindle store is similar to iTunes with apps, movies, books, magazines, music, etc. In fact, I found that the Amazon store has cheaper prices on most music than iTunes so I get my music from Amazon now. It also has a free cloud server. For the average person/commuter, there's no reason to spend lots of money for an iPad when the Kindle Fire is only $199.

We have three android tablets, a 10" for me, and the wife & daughter have 7" tablets. We all have library cards, so we can download ebooks and audiobooks from the library, which are free. We can also download kindle books from the library, which are also free. You can also sign up for multiple library cards, one from your hometown and another from a library in a different consortium to increase the number of books available.
Great for surfing, great battery life (compared to laptop) and cheaper than a laptop. Good for email as well.

Reading his original post the Kindle Fire fits his needs perfectly. Its made for people who can't justify spending 500 dollars plus on a tablet.

If you have a blackberry phone you may want to consider a BlackBerry Playbook. I've got one and it tethers to my phone with no need to have an additional contract for wireless access. I like the size over the ipad also.

I purchased my wife the Fire for Christmas. It replaced her Kindle. She LOVES it. The only draw back to it is that it isn't 3g and wireless. Just wireless.

However, I think you can tether it through a device (cell phone) that will do 3 or 4g.

My wife watches movies, televeision shows and surfs the net on her's. Again, she loves it. I wouldn't be surprised to see amazon come out with a larger format. i.e. 9" or 10" screen.

Also, if you go with the Fire, join the Amazon Prime club. It's like 79 bucks a year. With that you get unlimited 2 day shipping on any items you order from Amazon, as long as there prime eligible. And you get free movies and tv shows etc... They have a ton to offer.

I'm just going to take a stab at it and guess, maybe ... iPad3 ?!?!?

Doesn't matter what iApple releases, you will buy it, you will pimp it. All of you sick Apple-holics and Apple-retards are so predictable.

T-3 had been standing in line for 2-days to buy it ... and no one knows what it is, yet.

Ook, seriously, I'm wondering what Apple can do to the iPad to keep it at the front of the market. Put a TV receiver it? Put Siri in it? What else?

Listening to talk radio ... 53% of iPad2 owners are planning to upgrade to iPad3 ... and no one even knows what the iPad3 is.

I'm tell ya ... owning iApple products makes 53% of people stupid.

Good news ... those folks upgrading will be dumping their iPad2's on line via Ebay and other websites. The iPad2 is expected to retain 70% of its value when sold as used.

I'm in no rush, although my wife is pestering me to upgrade so she can keep the iPad 2 for herself. I've also still got two G5 iMacs here. I'm usually the last one to buy new toys.

Edit 3/17: I bought her an iPad2, WiFi only, on sale, at the Apple Store. Still don't need a new one for myself.
