Default Odyssey Exploration - Black Swan - $1/2 billion treasure lost!

anyone else catch this show last night?

I remember trying to follow this story back in 2007 when the treasure find was announced.

I lost track and forgot about it all when last night by chance there was a documentary on the whole thing.

What a fubar outcome.

17 tonnes of gold and silver worth estimated 1/2 billion.

Even though found in international waters the spaniards were laying claim.

They even blocked the odyssey ships in Gibraltar and then illegaly boarded and arrested them in International Waters!

.. and now last month they were ordered to give everything over to the spanish because the state department sold them out over a nazi painting.

What a tragic ending

Yeah, I thought that outcome was pretty sucky. Thank a lawyer somewhere.

pretty easy to prove where the site is and that it's in international waters.

the spanish weren't even using that as proof of their claim. they were claiming the ship itself 'the mercedes' as sovereign property. even though the identity of the ship couldn't be proven.

and how far do spanish waters stretch out ?

If you ask a Democrat, they extend all the way to the Portuguese Coast...

See the X with the circle for her location,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuestra...e_las_Mercedes

Odyssey also call it the Black Swan, they said it was not the Nuestra Senora de Mercedes!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Swan_Project

Odyssey is full of Baloney, they got the permission for some other ship,
we knew was the Mercedes, Odyssey knew if they said it was the Mercedes,
they would not get approved to pull the treasure, so they lied about it!!!

Who cares if they lied about it? I don't see the spanish spending all of that money to go get their gold back...finders keepers if you ask me. This is another example of a company trying to do something LEGALLY and getting screwed in the end. They should just tell no one what they are doing and make a fortune.

Maritime law is totally different from our English common law. Many of the sunken vessels have active insurance claims on there contents. Others have owners rights that have existed for century's.

The show was pretty good. Once the lawyers and politicians got involved, I expected they'd lose it all.

Spain destroyed entire civilizations and cultures. Despicable little worthless country.

Hey Spain..When I find some of YOUR treasure on OUR beaches I'm keeping it, and you can KMA.

It's NOT Spain's treasure BTW....ALL of the gold was stolen from central America at gunpoint....if it's going to be returned...give it back to the source country...

there you go. that came across my mind when you had their cultural minister going on about it being part of their heritage

funny also how they were only interested in retreiving the gold and silver and wern't interested in working with odyssey to retreive any of the canons and other more personal artefacts.

odyssey tried to contact the spanish government on numerous occaisions before the work started. Is that a lie as well? bearing in mind that is a company that has worked with many governments and come to agreement to retrieve many wrecks... sounds like the spaniards were just too lazy to respond until they saw the treasure then figured they would steal like the good ole days

Did the show mention that Spain's lead attorney happens to be the Chairman of RPM Nautical Foundation, a not-for-profit that excavates shipwrecks and may compete with Odyssey for archaeological work?

IMO Odyssey knew exactly what they were getting into with Spain and took a dumb risk. It's not the first time Spain shut down a US treasure hunting company with a claim of sovereign ownership; the last time the wrecks were in US state waters. Look up Juno and Galga.

Thousands of armchair treasure hunters say 'what about finders keepers?', but Odyssey's business plan for much of their work counts on the principle of sovereign ownership of shipwrecks--the legal reason they lost this one. Sovereign ownership by the UK of the HMS Sussex and Victory allowed Odyssey to negotiate recovery contracts with the British government.

Pirate booty, is pirate booty...

Found it interesting, they found out the HMS Victory had portuguese gold,
they deny gold ever been found on the victory, they want to keep the booty all to themselves.

RPM Nautical Foundation conducts maritime archaeology in cooperation with governments. It is primarily funded by a single, very wealthy individual and they do not make any proceeds from their finds and recoveries. Their purpose to further human knowledge of the past.

What Odyssey is are treasure hunters and what they do is anything but archaeology. They paint a pretend veneer of concern, but money is the total motivation and all else is expendable.

The only competition between RRM and treasure hunters is to prevent the destruction of history in the search for profits.
