Default Need help combating metal thieves!!!!!

We have a scrap metal bin behind the shop that the scrap yard picks up when we fill it. Problem is we can get it full because of the damn thieves. I was thinking of putting two deer cameras up with infra red to at least get a picture of them and when they're coming by.... Any other ideas are welcome! Maybe a cheap smart phone security camera setup? How much would that cost? I would love to run a 240 leg to the bin but I would get sued in this liberal town.

Depending upon the nature of the scrap, metal theft is very lucrative. The cams are a great idea but you need to be able to photo a Tag number somehow.

Don't think a couple of AmStaffs would fly in Athens either particularly if they bite the perp.

Can't you lock it or maybe a wooden fence?

Shoot them dead with an unregistered firearm and a very good alibi.

When you throw your scrap out, weld to the pile.

Motion sensor and a barking dog recording?

Is it possible to get a bin with a cover you can lock at night?

Can you move the bin inside the shop at night? I am in the telecommunications industry and we deal with thousands of pounds of scrap copper. The theft got so bad that we moved the scrap bin inside and then dragged it out when the recycler came to pick it up. We tried covering and locking it, but the junkies would pry it open. You could also mark all of your scrap. Simple bright orange spray paint. Then tell the local yards that if this stuff comes in that they need to keep an eye open for it.

Make sure you report every instance to the police, if it is marked they will be forced to follow up with the scrap yards. Put the pressure on the scrap yard to not allow these crackheads to show up with material that is obviously stolen.

Put the barking dog recording inside of the container.

Maybe a little Jerry Rigging required, but motion sensors that are somehow wired to a relay that turns a sprayer on that blows out a concoction of oil-based day-glow paint/pepper spray combination?

If you have compressed air in the shop, then you're in business. Activated/de-activated by the security system being set?

Signs on all the fences warning of...."Bad Results!", of course.

We had a electronics store (years ago) that kept getting broken into at night. It had the typical alarm with siren outside. After the 2nd breakin we added a ultra loud siren inside as well. I can't remember exactly but it was over 110db and powered by 4 6v. lantern batteries (24vdc). After that I believe we got broken into again but they didn't take anything. Evidently they couldn't stay inside with the noise. We added bars to the windows and doors and that ended the robberies.

A electric fence energizer meant for livestock would not kill them but certainly would make them think twice. Might even make for some entertaining surveillance footage.

I don't know, but if I see one in a dumpster, I bet I'll be heading in the other direction.

I think it's from South America.

The thieves are probably putting the metal in a pick up and taking it directly to the recyclers.

Perhaps getting rid of the dumpster and following their lead might be the answer.

Due to our extreme litigous society, you have to be careful about devices such as electrified fencing, or a spray paint system. You could be sued and have charges filed against you.

Even when a sign on the fence alerts people that they are trespassing AND that they will end up with bad results if they trespass?
