Default I want an MP3 player.

I really want an MP3 player for the gym, and other random useless times. Please give me some recommendations on which one to get. I'm a cheap azz when it comes to electronics, so I'm not going out and buying a new 20gig Ipod. I probably won't spend more than $200. I probably will look for one on ebay. One that I am considering is the Dell Pocket DJ 5 gig model. $200 for player plus whatever for accessories I'm sure I'll waste my money on.

Another question. Where do you get the songs for these players? I have plenty of CD's, but they're a few years old and I haven't gotten any new cd's in a while. So that leaves me out of the loop for the new music. Is there an online service that you can pay a monthly fee for all the song downloads you want? I know apples is .99 per song or 9.99 per album. That's not rediculous, but I'd rather it be a monthly fee so that I can really start a collection right.

I am pretty sure napster has a pay per month service. If you want all your "old" stuff on the mp3 the player will come with software that will allow you to click and drag or upload files to the player.

Yeah, I saw Napsters ad during the superbowl, but the more I look at it, the more it looks like you pay a monthly subscription fee and then you still pay a per song fee that looks to be the same as apple's. If I'm wrong and anyone actually uses Napster, please correct me.

You may want to look at the new myfi player from xm radio. It is portable like a walkman and can be played through the boat and car stereos as well. Don't have to fool with downloading songs with the selection they have. Just a thought.
Also apple has a new model out that's around 99.00.
Good luck

I have the skyfi xm player in my car. I really want something that I can have control over the songs player in addition to the skyfi.

You guys in West Virginia are kinky!

I think I saw where Napster was like $15 per month with unlimited downloads. Seems like you could join, download all your stuff and cancel.

Napster only has a monthly fee and you can download as much as you want. I believe there will be a contract for a term such as annual. You might have to subscribe for a year. You will still have to purchase an mp3 player. I am also looking for a good deal on a mp3 player. I am looking forward to what people have to say.

With Napster you are actualy renting the music from them. You have to keep your subscription to Napster current to play the songs since they imbed a code into the music that disables it if you cancel your subscription (or if they go out of buiseness).

Thanks for that link. That crosses napster off my list of download services. It looks like an ipod is a better way to go.

A couple years ago, I bought a Gateway 256 MB MP3 player that is small and works well. Downside is the AAA battery life. Upside is the drag & drop from windows.

I recently bought an iRiver 256 and am very happy with it. 40 hours on a AA. Also has a line-in that you can use to record and rip audio direct to the player. Downside is proprietary software, but it works fine - just not drag & drop from windows. Price was about $130. I would opt for the 512 MB or 1 GIG at this point.

$299 20gig IPOD. IMO the best one out there. Itunes is a great program to transfer and arrange your music and the music store is .99 a song. The added plus is that there are so many accessories, that you can do almost anything with it.
I have it hooked into my Clarion on the boat, mounted on my helm, and plgged into an acc outlet. Also have it set up to go in my truck.

Just got an IPOD Shuffle for my daughter. $99.00. When you register it you get 1 free song per week and .99 each after that. Have'nt fired it up yet, need a cable.

I download music at www.allofmp3.com. I actually got the link from THT last time this topic came up. It's a Russian site, I send them some money and I am able to download what seems like an infinite amount of music in any format or bitrate I want. It comes out to like $.03 a song. When you cruise the forums for MP3 Players allofmp3 seems to rise to the top for mp3 services. I've download some 1000 plus songs and paid like $30 or so. Like I said, it is cheap.

I like my 20g iPod.
I think the music you down load from Apple also has embedded coding that restricts how many times and where you can copy it too. Not sure of the exact details.

That is why I bought a 20GB Iriver HDD Player instead of the Ipod. No copyright restrictions. It's not as easy to use as the Ipod/Itunes setup though, but once you get the right software it is close.
