Default How to keep my Best Friend from chewing my shoes?

We just got a 1 year old Red Bone Hound about three weeks ago, and she chews everything in the house. Anybody got any ideas on how to get her to stop, besides a good spanking?

Go to one of the bette pet shops in your area. Dont recall the brand names but the make a spray (wont bother you) but put on the pups targets will keep them away. In addition get some rawhide bones/chews, to give her an option. Worked with my shepherd in addition to a finger off the nose, in conjunction with a loud NO. Have patience and good luck.

There is a guy in our striper club that has replaced his transducer 3 times now. His dog chews them up like bubblegum. Never heard it before. His wife tried some of that spray stuff and that did not help. He finally stopped the dog's need to plastic by sliding a butter bean can over the ducer. We now call him "Butter Bean."

My border collie solved her own chewing problem . S he would drag stuff all over the house and yard. One day I came in from work and she was sitting in the middle of the dock and would not move.
She had been playing with the BBQ burger fliper and got the leather strap hung on her collar. She had had that thing hanging on her neck for half a day. Molly will not touch anything that is not her personal toy after that.

Maybe you could try tying a shoe around her collar for a short time, While you are supervising him. Good luck.

The stuff Ron from New Jersey is talking about is called "Bitter Apple" and it comes in a white spray bottle with a green and, yellow label. It's great stuff. Even though our girls are pretty good about chewing now, if I get something nice I douse it in Bitter Apple.

I tried the bitter apple stuff. It went along with some very good and stiff disipline. I don't know what method worked but it stopped.

My boxer rides the little bus to school and wears a colored helmet.

My youngest lab got a hold of my boat shoes, they were shredded. I got em made sure she was watchimg and beat em on the kitchen floor as loud as I could. She looked at me like I was crazy. Had to do it twice before she got the hint. The last pair of shoes she was in had a treat stuck in it. I felt horrible after yelling at her "messing with the shoes" once I realized what she really wanted.

WITH A LAB THAT CHEWED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING, BITTER APPLE IS GREAT BUT MAKE SURE YOU REINFORCE WITH A ROLLED UP NEWSPAPER. DO NOT HIT YOUR BABY JUST SMACK THE PAPER AND MAKE THE NOISE. IT WORKS

I have a 2 year old Lab, that has never destroyed anything in the house. My neighbor's got a Lab around the same time we did, and he ate up everything in the house. My buddy is a police dog trainer and gave me these tips. 1. Buy a cage. A big enough one where he can grow into it. 2. When you can not have your eyes on the puppy, put him in the cage. (going to bed at night, leaving the house,etc...) 3. Buy the bitter apple stuff and sqirt it around baseboards, couch corners, and anything else you think he may chew. 4. Have a couple of bones for him to chew on. Never give him anything, like an old shoe or rope, to play with. He will get confused and grab other things he is not supposed to chew. Only let his mouth come in contact with his bones. 5. If he even sniffs or licks anything but his bone, in a very loud voice YELL "Leave it", or "NO". 6. Repeat for the next 6 months untill he gets out of the chewing stage and realizes he can only chew on his bones. It's a pain, but puppies are a lot of work. We weaned our dog off of the cage thing at about 8 months. By 1 year, he had the roam of the house. Works great!!! Good Luck!!!

Forget anything when you are not right there until the dog is older...especially red bone, blue tick, black and tan, lab, bird dogs....

I nearly renamed my lab/chow mix Chamfer. He clipped the corners of everything when he was a pup. I tried all sorts of sprays, brush ons, even started rubbing pepper oil on my house just to keep him from eating the siding. Nothing really worked, short of putting him on a runner away from the house when I wasn't with him.

Time tempers bad habits. He finally grew out of it.

Come to find out, he was pulling siding off trying to catch lizards!
