THE EXPOSITOR MIDWEEK.......TUESDAY, FEB 8/05

Joey Stasica and Eric Westerveld heard the train coming Wednesday afternoon as they walked single-file beside the railroad tracks.
Moments later, Stasica lay dead in a snowbank.
Westerveld, 17, said he and Stasica, 19, were on the CN main line that runs between Brantford and Pais when repeated sharp blasts broke the air.
They were walking to their home in Paris from school, having fun with a new digital camera. The two teens did see the train coming.
But, because of the angle, Westerveld said it looked as if the train was speeding toward them on an adjacent track just beyond the Oak Park Road crossing. Besides, he said , they weren't on the tracks, but next to them.
The teens were misguided on both points.
The train — wider than the tracks — was on the rails closest to them and clipped Stasica, sending him into
Westerveld. Both teens landed in a snowbank.
...............
.........
............
Despite the efforts of the two engineers, a female doctor (on the VIA passenger train) and the ambulance attendants Stasica was pronounce dead on the scene.
.............
...........
.............
VIA Raiul spokesperson Seychelle Harding said that the engineers clearly saw the teens and repeatedly blew the train's whistles.
"The boys were right beside the tracks, but very close," said Harding. "(The engineers) wanted the boys completely off the site, but the boys just didn't move."
..............
.........
..............

My footnotes:

I've got to feel for the family and friends here, but I have different thoughts towards the victim(s).
I don't know about where you guys live, but here in Brantford kid just don't want to move out of the way of traffic. It doesn't matter if they are walking, cycling, in-line skates or skateboarding, they act like they have the right of way and it is the vehicle that has to move for them. This train accident is typical of our youths attitude in these parts - THEY JUST WON'T MOVE.

A secondary thought: It is also typical of the youths in these parts to push the envelop, it seems like a game to them on how close they can get to you vehicle while you are driving. They think it is a joke / game and will tell you to f-off if you stop and say anything to them.

Well this accident is typical of that mentality. Joey Stasica paid the ultimate price for his stupidity, but I think there is hope of Eric Westerveld.

Sometimes you just got to say, "WHAT THE F###?"
He must have been a tuff mother though to be able to make it back to the bar after that. After a small impact with another object I have trouble getting off the floor. I never considered cutting them off and then going for a 10 minute walk.

It's been 58 years and I'm still pissed off that they cut off Mr. Happys hat. No way I'm gonna sacrifice Mo and Larry on a bet.
Honey, you can rub, fondle, carress, douse in jam or whipped cream, use, abuse, or for that matter, confuse, however, you may not take them to your place if I am staying home two miles cross town.

Well one thing is for certain, he'll no longer have the balls to do anything in the future.
What a bozo.
So what's the bright side here......he won't have to worry about getting kicked in the nuts while in a bar room brawl? ........which is a good thing.
