Default Are you obese?

I was just watching the news and they said that 67% of all Americans are overweight or obese. I went to the link below to see what life insurance companies consider to be obese. I am 6' 4" and haven't seen 200 lbs since I was cutting weight 25 years ago! Is America getting fatter or are the standards changing?

Is America getting fatter??

You have to be kidding. Right??

Take a look around you, man. No frickin' doubt about it.

And what's scary is the parents who don't have enough brains to stop shoving sugar and empty carbs down their kids' gaping mouths. Not to mention turning off the tube and getting the little fatties outside to do something besides sit on their butts.

This is the IMPENDING AMERICAN HEALTH CARE CRISIS that is going to make AIDS look like a national toothache.

Spaceman, I hear you. I guess my post was of a more personal nature. As I said, I am 6' 4", larged frame, and those life insurance charts have me 50 pounds overweight. I work out every day (almost) and have the ol' fortysomething belly but I don't consider myself obese. I am basically the same size as my grandfather when he was my age.

Now to what you are talking about. Its pathetic what some parents are doing to their children. Its pathetic what they are doing to themselves. But, that wasn't the thought behind my post, even though it may seem so.

I was just surprised at what is considered "overweight" these days.

Try this Shag and see if it helps....I just did a quick search to find an alternative source of the definition of "Ideal" weight.

It bothers me that everything is defined in terms of weight. I am almost 6' tall, and weigh 185, and am not overweight at all. I am of a decent size frame, but not anywhere close to being a lineman or anything like that. There seems to be no emphasis being place on being generally fit.

I'm 6'0" and weigh a feathery 227. I'm that guy that when when it's my turn to water ski, everyone has to pile up in the bow so the boat can get on a plane

I am @ 160# (fresh off the scales) - but I don't know how TALL I am??? I laid down on the floor to check, but when I got up to go get the tape measure and came back, I was GONE - and couldn't remember exactly where I was laying?

So I've got "that" goin' for me!

I wear "men's petite" in slacks and shirts, and my "physique" is admirable - when I'm walking on my HANDS!

Actually, according to Shag's chart, I am about 8# OVERweight -
assuming I have a "medium build" (I subTRACTED 5# for clothing and shoes).

Yep - there are a LOT of folks WAY overweight - and it looks like the parents pass it on when bringing up their kids - in the form of "buffets", grocery shopping, lifestyle, etc.. Besides the obvious things like heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc. - there are many other things that will cut into the life-span of these children! In this day and age, it doesn't take a lot of brainpower to find out "what's good and what's bad" for you and adjust the diet and exercise to help out - the info is available EVERYWHERE - and most of the time, it's FREE!

Regards,

Thats a bunch of sh!t!

*Ideal Weights according to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables (1983)

Look at how many Aerobics videos and gyms we have now and how many people are so health concious, as opposed to 30 years ago. I agree with what said above about our kids and getting them outside rather than letting them sit in front of the tube all day, though.

I think one of the most significant changes over the past years is the gap between the fit and the fat. There seems to be less and less of a "norm" and more extreemly fit people, as well as a lot more obese people.

5'9" 230 pounds and jolly as hell.

My daughter refers to folks that are in between obese and skinny as "fluffy."

I think all my body fat is lining the inside of my arteries.

Yea...by the charts I am. I work out..weights and cardio regularly and farm pretty hard along with my regular job so I am in good shape (no gut,etc.)...still at 5'7" and 194# I am off the chart. My physician says with a chuckle..."your target weight is 160# but that doesn't factor in body type"....yea, haven't been 160 since I was 5'5" and 16 yrs old!!! So, you gotta take the national charts with a grain of salt...though there are alot of really overweight people in th US.

I gained a frew pound since retirement; 6-1 249. I have cut my weight down to 137 in a month. I hate the winter; but really I used to burn alot of calories in the military. Now I sit at a desk and I have become lazy. I still am active but not as near as I was. I will soon turn 40 (2 days) so I am sure things are slowing down

You know what the funny part is!!?? My wife is a, small framed 4'11" and weighs 90# which is fine. If she weighed 92 pounds, she'd loose those 2 pounds in a heartbeat and get back to 90#

That stupid chart says that her normal weight should be 103 - 113 pounds. Let me tell ya, if she weighed 103 pounds I don't think I could handle it because she'd be driving me CRAZY!

I think the guy's name who made that chart was Dr. We Todd Ed
