Default Has anyone noticed how long movies are on TV

I was kinda watching Mr and Mrs Smith tonight and the running time is 3.5 hours. I went to Netflix to see the actual running time. 2hrs. then I started looking at other movies and it seems most movies are now in a min 2.5 hr slot. The stations are actually shoveling an extra half hour of commercials into movies that didn't run a full 2 hrs at the theater.

.... Ok I feel better now that the THT world knows this

You have to use alternate options. I DVR shows I like and after every commercial they recap what you just watched before the commercial. I've watched a 30 min show in less than 15 min. I can't stand commercials. Marketing has gotten out of control and I really can't see how they get a return on the investment sometimes.

1. I don't watch commercials anymore. Ever.

2. I try to avoid network tv channels showing movies...

3. There's other means

DVR's or as we call them up here PVR's are just the bomb!

Go a little deeper into the rabbit hole you'll notice programmers will start the movie off with very few commercials and those commercials will be well spaced. As the movie plays and the viewer(s) become captivated the commercials become more frequent and more of them. Since most script is formatted with the climax is at the end the advertisers/ programmers have the viewer over the proverbial barrel and that’s when the commercials really start to hit the viewer.

I've seen programming where the commercial time exceeds the program timing by getting close to 2:1. 45 minutes worth of commercials in a two hour program is no longer the gold standards for raking in the dough.

Yesterday it was 1-2 commercials per commercial break, now-a-days the norm is 5-7 in a row. And the ones that Really gets my goat are the ones that run upwards of 10 commercials in a row, bounce over to the program highlight trailer for a few seconds and then bounces back into another 7 - 10 commercials!

This! Unless I'm watching a sporting event, I never watch a commercial. The only downside is that I am always left in the dark when it comes to new movies in theaters because I never see the trailers.

Same here....on Netflix..a old typical 1/2 hour sitcom usually only has a runtime of 20-25 min

It's even worse than that.....they cut out some of the movies too so it's more than an extra 1/2 hour of commercials.

Many of the movies have a disclaimer stating formated for TV or adjusted for the time alloted. You know when you hook on they have already screwed you. Edited film and loaded with ads.

Nothing like watchig a "Directors cut" while it's edited to fit the alloted time frame. What a Joke.

My point is that the time allotted for any given movie has gone from 2 hrs to a min of 2.5 and in the case of my example was 3.5 hrs. I remember when Dances with Wolves was released and critics all made negative comments on the length of the movie.

DVR everything and fast forward thru the commercials. For live sporting events, rewind when they go to commercial, rewatch a few of the prior plays, then fast forward through the commercial. Its pretty easy to do all of this once you get used to it. I can not remember when I last saw a single commercial.

We have to be careful here or otherwise the Mods will move this post over to the sport's forum.

But as long as the teams continue to pay their individual players ten million dollars plus a season the volume of commercials are only going to get worse!!!!!! Hey here's to PVR's.

Have you noticed that some of the old shows, like MASH are now run for 34 minutes?
The old FCC rule was 12 minutes/hr; it was recently extended to 20 minutes. Seems the cable industry was complaining about loosing money......
Same thing on movies shown which are 30% commercials.

I simply refuse to watch regular TV anymore. You can't get into any of the shows or movies due to the constant interruption of commercials that appear to be aimed at people with IQs less than jello.

I would not want any of the basic channels, just the movie channels, but they don't allow that.
