Default Fords replacement for the Excursion?

Several weeks ago someone mentioned that Ford would was going to discontinue the Excursion in Sept 05. Supposedly it is going to be replaced by a scaled down version that would be available with diesel power. I will be in the market for a diesel powered suv in the near future and wondering if anyone has any info on this new vehicle?

1970 extended bed Bronco with a v10 would make me a buyer......heck maybe I should take the v10 out of my Excursion and convert a Bronco on my own.....

Sigh. Thanks to W.C. Ford kissing the treehuggers butts , as of September there will no longer be a full size diesel SUV available from any manufacturer.

A stretch Expedition won't be anywhere near the class of vehicle that the Excursion is.

Yup, if you want a diesel you will have to buy a truck. BTW - I heard they are going to redesign the frame on the extended Exped. - time will tell.....

I guess there goes my idea of a 3/4 ton surburban with the duramax, it was going to be the perfect mix of family and utility.

....#$%@ Tree-huggers....

The issue with the tree huggers didn't seem to be with the diesel; it was with some of the early V10 Excursions whose owners were reporting <10MPG in town (strange, but every V10 X owner I've ever met gets much better than that) and the simple fact that it was (IS) the largest production SUV. The Sierra Club was attacking it and calling it the Ford Valdez almost before it was announced. Funny but they never attacked the similar-sized 454-powered Suburbans. Even my own X has been vandalized, presumably by some envirowhacko (keyed the entire right side when it was only three weeks old .

It's amazing how well the Excursion sells, considering that Ford put in ZERO marketing effort for the vehicle.

I've heard that the 3/4 ton Suburban/Yukon XL is not available with the Dmax because the Allison transmission physically won't fit in the trans tunnel. If available, that would not be too bad of an alternative (would prefer a domestically-made engine, though).

I for one would love to finally see a 3/4 ton Burb with the Duramax/Allison. Would have beena perfect vehicle for my needs. Guess I'll stick with my gasser Burb for now.

Re: gas mileage - my Ex came with a built in gas flow gauge - I have not reset it in over 20,000 miles and my avg mpg is 13 (that is probably 50% city, 50% highway). I drive it like I am stealing the car (+ 85 mph highway) and this baby weighs 7,200 lbs. It is a great SUV....my only complaint is the fuel cut off at 95 mph.

I agree the environmental issue was there, but the whole Ford restructuring plan announced in 01-02 put the Excursion on the block. They have just been backing up the expiration date, IMO of course...

This is true - late in 2002 FoMoCo announced that either '03 or '04 would be the last year for the X, and that date continued to slip to the right (most likely based on development delays on the extended Expedition). But, I'm convinced that Ford's lack of promotion of the Excursion (remember, it came out in 1999 as a 2000 model) was due to all of the negative publicity from the enviro-Nazi's.

Ford's biggest marketing mistake here was trying to pitch the 3/4 ton X to soccer moms driving 1/2 ton Suburbans, and as such made some very bad engineering decisions to soften the Excursion's ride (Load range D tires, recently replaced on "voluntary safety campaign", and soft springs that seriously limit the Excursion's towing and hauling capacity).

I've got a '97 Bronco (full size - last year they made it) and I love it. I thought by now I would have seen someone chop the middle out of an Excursion and make a sweet Bronco III!

Another vote for bringing back the bronco - I'd buy it.
