Default Way to go Drew....you just breezed past Marino

Drew Brees just passed Marino ( 1984 5,084 yds) for the all time single season passing record with a total of 5,087 yds.

Noticed in his post-game interview, it was we, we, we. No "I".

Andy ,thats why I said I think the '85 Bears would destroy this Pac Team.Richard Dent would be teeing up Rodgers and they would never be able to slow down Walter ''Sweetness'' Payton............

Your right the rules have changed big time since Marino. This record wont last long now and it's surprising he did'nt break it last year.

2 years ago, he missed it by 15 yards or so. In fact, the game pass that should have got it for Drew then, the receiver dropped the ball...OOPS! Saints will have a real battle against GB.

Breez seems like a good guy and records are meant to motivate and keep "uping" the bar. Still, keep in mind all the rules that have changed favoring the offensive passing game while the emphasis in the 80's was to primarily run first then set up the pass. When you consider the football dynamics of then versus now Marino's numbers take on special meaning.

Awesome achievement regardless of the asterisk. He seems like a good person as well.

Too bad people making beneficial scientific breakthroughs don't get the same praise, money and popularity. Oh well.

The level of difficulty in 84 when marino did it was way highr than today. The league wants the teams to be pass happy because its more exciting to see 60 yard bombs than to see 4 yards and a cloud of dust. That was the MO of the nfl years ago but not any more. Also factor in that brees played 11 dome games in perfect weather in domes. Dont know how many domes marino played in in 84 but im sure it was less than 4. Wind and rain play a major factor in passing footballs. With that being said its still a great record that will soon be broken again just like the home run record. My only question is when he went to NO the dolphins passed on him because they didnt think he was good enoug to play in miami..... WTF!!!

I think you also have to take into account the way defenses where set up to defend against the run in the 1980's and where not prepared for an offense that threw the ball 30+ times a game. In 84 during the whole season only 5 teams attempted over 500 passing plays. In the 2011 season over 10 teams have attempted over 500 passing plays and there is still a game left to play. Simple odds would tell you that even if there were no rule changes the chances of someone breaking his record would double simply by # of attempts.

Marino set that record with the Dolphins because set up their offense to let Marino throw and had almost no running game to speak of. I read a stat somewhere that Marino had thrown for more touchdowns inside the five yard line than any quarterback in history. I think that Marino would have been a middle of the road quarterback had not Shula simply designed the offense to let him throw any time he wanted to do so. I am not a big fan of Marino, the quarterback.

1984 the NFL had a 16 game season and the passing per game for all teams averaged 206 yards. Marino had 5,084 yards in 16 games or 318 per game or 54% above the league average.

2011, after 15 games, the NFL has all teams averaging 229 yards passing per game. Brees has 5,087 in 15 games or 339 per game or 48% above the league average.

OK, it is easier to pass and catch in 2011. Marino did better than Brees compared to the league's average but not by much.

Brees still puts his pants on one leg at a time. But Brees has done it better than anyone this year. This season is not a fluke - he has been at the top for a while.

I do have a (Bama and Houston) problem rooting for anything football from Louisiana. Here's hoping the Saints lose quickly in the post-season
