Default Key Largo Fishing

We normally go fishing out of Key Largo area for Dolphin. I used to go fishing with "the guys" and counted on the experience of others that I was with. I purchased a 23' W/A Pro Line and took my family for their first real fishing trip. The seas were the normal 3-4's which is about 2' higher than the surf on our side of the state (Fort Myers Area).

I am looking for some tips on rigging Ballyhoo. I purchased some pre-wired hooks and then made some myself. I had a hard time geting the ballyhoo to swim straight and look natural. I even cut the tail bone so it wouldn't be stiff, and they still swam or spanked the water.

Any help on rigs, skirts or teasers I need all the help I can get! We will be down in March looking to max out, and I would like to get a plan in place. Thanks for your feedback!

Default RE: Key Largo Fishing

This article is a good start.

I personally just use the pre rigged hoos you can buy at the Yellow bait house in Key Largo. My spread usually uses 2 hoos with either pink/white or yellow/green skirts and 2 dolphin Jr. plastics. Once they are by the boat I use live pin fish, frozen finger mullet or cut squid.

Last bit of advice March is still pretty early in the season as far as weather goes. So it might be hit or miss as far as how hard the wind is blowing. Anything over 15 knots and it wouldn't be a fun ride in a 23' boat. I check the weather using the Molasses Reef weather info from NOAA here In case your not familiar Molasses Reef is right offshore of Key Largo.

Good Luck.
