Default Marine Traffic Site

I thought this site would be fun. I tried to find the Worlds Deadliest Catch fishing vessels out to see with no luck. Looks like they have them blocked? King Crab fishing started in October right? I did spot the Northwestern earlier in the year cruising along.

I do not think they are required to have or operate AIS not sure. You can easily turn off AIS. I am sure good fisherman don't want their competiton knowing where they are fishing.

How far does each individual fishing vessel radar reach on average? Can they see the competition that way?

I thought AIS was required for commercial vessels and there was some discussion about making it required for pleasure boats over a certain size, but pleasure boats were still exempted. That was a couple years ago. Now? ;?

It wont pick up a boat unless it has AIS and is in range of a reciever that is hooked up to the website.

Try looking for them in Seattle, some of them go there in the summer. Also not all areas are covered. I rarely see anything in Galveston Bay and that is a huge shipping area.

These sites are dependent on shoreside receivers hooked up to a PC and the web. You will only see boats where a shoreside unit can pick them up and that are in VHF range.

Long Island Sound isn't covered either except at the east and west ends
