Default Preventing picking up germs in public places...

What lengths do you go to try and prevent getting sick from say, door handles, elevator buttons, the coffee pot handle or the automated touch screen when ordering your food at the local "Quick Mart", anything that the public touches thousands of times a day.

My wife and I once watched a kid at a restaurant rub the salt shaker top under his nose for a little while. We told the waitress about it hoping to get it cleaned.

Here is a story / report on gas pump handles.

If you are the one that is sick, and just blew your nose or coughed in your hand, what do you do to keep from spreading germs, if anything at all?

I got back from a vacation cruise on 10-23. Went to work on Monday, 10-24 and half way through the day I felt something coming on and I have been sick ever since.

I wash my hands as much as possible or use the anti-bacterial liquid when I am sick (or when I am not). I'm not OCD about it but I think if I would have, washed my hands, I may not be sick now. You can't prevent everything but being conscious of it isn't a bad thing either.

I do my best to not touch snot, blood or poop. Otherwise, I don't do a thing.... I just don't worry about germs. I get sick once per year like clock work- a cold in December.

Wash your hands before you eat and after you use the head. Don't touch anything gross and if you do wash up. Keep your hands and fingers out of your nose and your mouth. Anything beyond that is probably not helping much.

Agree. Isolating yourself when ill can help too but its often unrealistic. Hand Sanitizer is better than nothing when soap is unavailable.

We wipe down doorknobs, refrig handles etc as part of normal cleaning but don't get crazy with it. If I wipe a counter, Ill do the other stuff while I'm at it.

Keep your hands away from your face. There are traces of feces on just about all cell phones. Hopefully they are yours....

I don't even think about it.

I think the whole germ phobia craze is a clever way to sell us products we don't need

Don't be so paranoid. Unless you have a weakened immune system, exposure to germs in the standard, everyday quantities is a good thing. When your body is exposed to small amounts of pathogens, it will sometimes build an immunity to said pathogen without you ever having symptoms. Think of it as a mini-vaccination. Washing/ using hand sanitizer all the time does more harm then good. This rings especially true with children. If you sanitize their hands every 5 minutes, you will only do them a disservice in the long run by not allowing them to build a natural immunity, as a result they will get sick more easily and more often. We are also creating super germs with the over sanitation and overuse of antibiotics, but that's another subject. Now I'm not saying never wash, but be logical about it... Before eating and after the bathroom obviously makes sense but to wash after to using a door? That's just ridiculous.

My customers are Dr's offices and hospitals. When I walk through the areas where the patients are I hold my breath. Almost passed out the other day.

I read an article that said the flu germs can hang in the air for weeks or such. Drives me crazy.

Fist Bump: The germ-free handshake

In a professional meeting/setting, I believe the traditional hand shake will not be, should not be replaced with the fist bump.

In public bathrooms I'll open the door or flush with my elbow or foot. Other than that I don't worry about it.

I know people that take a vitamin C pill everyday and they swear by it.

I smoke and drink lots of vitamin C via screwdrivers in a effort to make sure my body is not a place germs can live.

While I do smoke and and drink, I really just try not to touch my face this time of year but other than that, very little. I did not get sick for a while and now i get sick once a year.
