They're being investigated here for colluding with contractors to do sub-code repairs to avoid more expensive settlements. I'm not saying they did it, just that they were in the papers last spring for this reason.

Well, I have been a customer of theirs since before hurricane Andrew hit south Florida. That is why they have kept me still today. They have dropped everyone who signed on with them since Andrew. So I got my renewal just about a month ago. they raised my rates 184%.
I am busy the next two weeks. But after that, I am going to war with State Farm. I will more than likely cancel my home owners, and take all 4 of my auto policies someplace else also.

In the 60's my parents had State Farm so I went with it too. I had it for about 10 years, but it was always a hassle. Initially I was paying the agent directly, he failed to send my payments in on time. It took almost 6 months to get them to admit it was their fault. Anyway, if was one thing after another, (including unexplained increases in premiums) so I finally dropped them in 1976 and went with USAA (I'm military). But frankly USAA sucks too. Eventually I went with Farmers. They were great. I had them for about 10 years until 2005, when bought a motorhome. So now I have GMAC through Good Sam. But I still wish I had the Farmers. They always treated me well, there was a local agent I could talk to face to face, and the rates were good.

if you have farm bureau mutual ins co active in your state, give them a try. you do not have to be a farmer to buy the ins.

State farm has apparently gotten clobbered in weather-related incidents ove rthe last few years. I still have them for house and car but I went with Progressive on the boat. SF would not cover a boat in a slip in MA.

Take a look at the farmersinsurancegroupsucks.com and farmersreallysucks.com websites.

I used to "bundle" my insurance, but always seemed to be getting shafted on one coverage or another. Currently:

MetLife - Homeowners and Life
21st Century (they were bought by Farmers last year) - Daily driver autos
Haggerty - classic car
1st Beacon - yacht policy; agreed value WITH loss coverage in Mexico.

All have been great. Very difficult to beat 21st Century's auto rates anywhere and they were excellent on two recent claims. Met has been good on home, even with one claim a few years back when the roof got ripped off the house in a bad monsoon storm. My rates have been as low or lower than anyone else and I shop rates at least every two years. In fact, one of my fishing buddies is an insurance broker and I had him look over my policies. He said "Keep' em. I can't get you any better rates than what you've got."

GEICO, All State, Progressive... fuggidaboudit. What do you think their marketing budgets are to keep that stupid gekko, Dennis Haysbert, and please-shoot-the-bitch Flo in your face 24/7???

Had State Farm for homeowners, cars and boat. Homeowners went up 50%. Dropped the homeowners and went with Universal. SF quit doing boat ins, went with Progressive. Got mad and shopped auto ins-- NOBODY could beat SF on auto insurance. Most companies didn't even give me a quote, just admitted they could'nt beat SF price on auto. Go figure.

I switch ins companies almost every year.
If you stay with any company, they will slowly increase your rates, no rewards for loyalty in that business!

I've been with state farm since the mid 90's and couldn't be happier. My business insurance is with them as well. I've had several auto claims and a couple homeowners claims (including a flooded lower level) and they've done a very good job of taking care of us. Fast response every time and no haggeling over the amount of the claim. Couldn't be happier.

Samething happened to me last year. My family has had everything insured with them. Add it all up and our family probably has been a customer of theirs for ~60+ years. Now they get none of our business. And in the end all of us have saved a good amount of money by switching carriers. It was crazy when I dropped them and I got a call from the agent throwing out a bunch a scare tactics.

I have my home owners ins with Florida Family now and all my vehicles with Travlers.
