Yes it came on in some locations, but in many it didn't. Which is what scares me so much. So lets say tomorrow there is a national disaster and they need to get to us, this system will not work.

I can still look out for myself. My neighbors and me can help each other out and hopefully work through an issue.

With that said, you'd have to have your head in the sand not to know something was up if the the eas failed. There are so many more immediate modes of communication i'm suprised it's still around.

Yeah, pretty ridiculous system if you ask me, on any given day I am watching LIVE TV approx 0% of the time and LIVE RADIO approx 2% of the time.

If you want to get me a message, text me, or email me, or replace the THT homepage.

So you're scared because some guy on youtube told you a nearly 50 year old government run alert system that has never been used for a national emergency didn't work? Really?

Just follow the Fox News twitter feed, they'll let you know when the end is near. Or you could just butch up.

Just another example of governmental efficiency at work. I can't think of anything catastrophic enough to warrant an alert going out to the entire country at the same time, unless it was to tell us that the White House was being invaded by terrorists and we were being warned to stay away and not attempt a rescue, at least at this current time.

News channels will tell us if anything is happening and, even with CNN, the information will be more believable than that the government tells us.

Many good points above. But the primary unresolved issueduring emergencies is still as it was sin 911,communications. An EBS type system is extremely important should your power be out and cell phones, cable and much commercial electronic communications fail. During Irene and the blizzard it was nearly impossible to get updated information - unless you communicated with an unaffected area. The radio stations all remained talk or music and, most are on a national or centralized format based system. I suggest the US military operate the system - Its our costliest agency but it works very well. And, lets face it if any very large scale emergency unfolds you need a military structure to address it and its gonna be the National Guard and USA Armed forces that are gonna do it. Appropriate local agencies also need to access as needed. Needless to say the broadcast stations need redundant emergency power source.

We also have to develop alternative energy resources simply for redundancy and do something about our reliance on centralized electric power.

You can have all the food water ammo fuel and such in your bomb shelter but if the underground worms (tremors comes to mind) come or some airborne poison or bacteria you may want to know that.

It would be good if they broadcast on all consumer bands - am, fm, ham whatever and cheap battery radios should be available to get the broadcasts, perhaps even automatically set to a predesignated national emergency frequency.

Most frequently returned item after Irene and after blizzard - generators and batteries....

Nobody returned their beer or booze to the best of my knowledge.

Let's face it, by the time the bureaucratic red tape of the government is well polished and the government gets their ass in gear and sounds the alarm our asses are f--ked anyways.

If the alarm sounded right now for example, how long do you think it would take for the streets to become total mayhem? Fires, looting, murders and rapes would be...well you know.

Maybe, just maybe the failed system is just what the government wanted....they planned it to fail. Now the general public knows the system isn't fool proof and is subject to failure. If all hell breaks loose and the system didn't notify you (because the government didn't want to create total mayhem in the streets) you'll just be another causality and the alarm not going off won’t matter one bit.
