Default Tablet advise.

Starting some Christmas research, my son (12 yr old ) wants a tablet. So my question is what brand? I-pad, Toshiba thrive, I kind of like this one or one of the many others. He loves to read so partialy for E-books, loves gaming and some web surfing. Any pros or cons from one to the other. Let me know what you think. Also dad needs to be able to surf THT on it when he can.

I have an 64gb iPad. My older laptop is rarely used now. The ipad does everything I need it to do, from reading, email, Internet browsing etc... I even take it on the boat - in a waterproof case of course.
My .02 on tablets ;-)

IPad, there is a reason they sell so well and it is not just because of good marketing.

Sad reality is the iPad is like most iApple products, they are great when there is no competition, but when the competition does show up it inevitably blows iApple out of the water.

The iPad is using archaic IPS display technology form 15-years ago. Who cares -- it's good enought ... until the compitition shows up. The Samsung Galaxy 10 series of tablets is used new, state of the art display PLS technology that blows the iPad away. If you can, view the two side by side.

IPS: IPS panels employ pairs of electrodes at the sides of each cell, running the electric field horizontally through the material. This approach keeps the liquid crystals parallel to the front of the panel, increasing viewing angle. The downside to this technology is that response times suffer and production of the panel can be very expensive.

PLS: A new technology developed by Samnsung is Super PLS (Plane to Line Switching), an advanced display touting 100 percent improvement in viewing angle and 10 percent increase in brightness. It is intended to supersede conventional IPS, with decreased production costs up to 15 percent as well as increased image quality. Display resolutions up to WXGA are supported. Mass production is planned for early 2011 for integration into smartphones and tablet computers. Super PLS displays are used in Samsung's own Galaxy Tab 10.0.

Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 at the same price point as an iPad but just a whole lot more machine.

So soon after the iPad was released and we have already arrived at the point where iApple's user interface is the only thing carrying the product. Other pads are already superior to the iPad's hardware in displays, CPUs, graphics drivers, internal RAM, case, build quality, etc. But iApple's user interface is remains the one to beat ... so far the competition has some catching up to do in that area ... for now.

Both iPad and Galaxy are 10-inch displays -- both priced the same, the Galaxy has twice the RAM inside the iPad has. Galaxy also has a smaller 8-1/2 inch Galaxy pad, and in Asia I saw the Galaxy 7-inch a year ago.

Something to consider with any pad is connectivity, e.g. what ports are available. Not all pads have USB, that might tbe important to you/your son.

Think about the apps too. Apple has lots of free apps and the paid-apps are mostly $.99. Android marketplace lacks the enormity of Apple's.

That's 100% true -- with the top 70% of recommended apps in the iTunes store appropriate/targeting children age 10 and under. iApple is now marketing the iPhone and iPad for ages 10 and under. I guess market saturation of adults?

Probably less important than how many apps is what apps are desirable and available, and which one aren't. The whole apps thing is quickly becoming a wash. Soon, Android apps will overrun iApple's apps. Who cares -- no one needs that many apps. But won't be surprised to see iApple upgrade the iPhone/iPads to run Android apps the way Macs can run Windows apps.

Do you think iApple will ever make Flash available on the products? When?

The ipad is close in price to the galaxy tab. That said, I chose the galaxy... Its a better table. Keekeep in mind also, the ipad does not have a gps built in unless its a 3g ipad. And if youre getting a tab thats tied into a carrier, the galaxy is 4g.

I have one with verizon. The tab itself is ok, but the 3g service sucks on it. Also when I bought it the guy at the VZW store told me my bill would only go up $20 a month it went up $35. Im going to cancel it and try to sell it, I can do most anything I want on my iPhone.

Don't get an iPad
I have the iPad 2 and it consistently pisses me off by not having Flash!!
Who knows, maybe with douche-bag gone they'll wise up but I doubt it.
