Default WWII code machine at auction

I have always been interested in WWII. I thought this was interesting. The Navajo talkers are better known but this code breaking had a huge effect that most don't know about.

If I ever go to England again, Blechely Park will be a must-see place.

Code breaking by the Brits was an amazing accomplishment. The German code and machinery was extremely sophisticated. That, and radar, are largely responsible for Britains survival.

For an excellent Historical book on Bletchy and Stephenson, find a copy of the book: A Man called Intrepid. It is riveting, and real. We dont realize that folks like Ian Fleming and David Niven WERE actuall spies and such.

Not to mention we gave them almost unlimited equipment on lend lease, alot of their airforce was filled out by US pilots even before we declared war. And don't forget the Merchant marines.

I'm surprised you said that the Navajo code talkers are better know than the enigma. I would have thought just the opposite. I could be wrong though...I've been wrong before!

Were we there?

Well, of course we helped. And vice versa..they shared information they obtained with us. Once we obtained an enigma and the code books from a U-boat, the Germans had no more secret transmissions.

The Navajo code talkers had one advantage..logic couldn't break it.

I don't know, my perception could be wrong. I doubt many Americans know the difference between a P-51 and a P-38 anymore. Since they made a movie in recent years about the Navajos (I believe "Windtalkers") more people would be aware of them.
