Default Are telemarketers getting smarter?

I'm at home being lazy this morning.

I have received several calls that are clearly from an automated system that seemingly connects me to a person once I answer the phone. So from my perspective: the phone rings, I answer it, then there is a period of silence and I can hear an operator pick up and ask for me or my wife while mispronouncing my name.

The kicker is that they are calling from local numbers, otherwise I wouldn't have answered the phone to begin with. I don't think these people are local, but must be using a program that masks the caller id. Bastards!

Even with the Do Not Call list, "Marilyn" of Credit Card Services keeps calling me to say there's nothing wrong with my credit card- and I need to do something about that right away! Good ol' Marilyn, a pre-recorded voice, has a different number every time she calls. I usually let her talk to my TV.

If I pick up the phone and hear dead air, I say "hello" immediately. There's never an immediate answer, then a click and a telemarketer says "hello?". Well, I already said "hello", so I wait silently for the caller to say what he's calling about. Funny- he always hangs up...

With VOIP phone systems, you can spoof the number and make it whatever you want it to be.

I do not answer the call if I do not recognize the name or number. The call can go to vm.

They are definitely getting more annoying, that's for sure! I have a few debt collectors that just don't stop calling. They ask for about 4 different names that I've never heard of. 3 or them have my same last name and one is a last name I've never heard before. Every time I tell them no one lives here by that name they say, ok we will remove your number. But that never happens! Another one is just automated and there are always messages from some automated message to return a call to some guy named Ed Blanchard. Yesterday I got an automated call on my cell that said press 1 to lower your interest rates. So I press one and some guy gets on and says, did you press 1 to lower your interest rates. I say no, I pressed 1 to find out where you got this number from! He hung up on me! They are ruthless scum.

Don't know what type of telemarketer your are talking about. On my side of the earth, I get a lot of those calls for "investment fund management blah blah". Call centers in India or Korea.
Well I take the phone and every 1 minute, I ask them to hold on. At least I made them loose some of their time too.

Same here. Why waste my time on what is a BS call 99.9% of the time.

Same treatment with email. Even if it makes it through my aggressive spam/virus filters I simply delete anything I don't recognize by sender.

If its meaningful they can send me US Mail or pound salt.

My wife just had oneof those calls about nothing wrong with your mortgage payment, but we can blah blah blah.... ON HER CELLPHONE!

I year ago, as I was sitting down to dinner, the phone rang, and I made the mostake of answering. Some guy trying to sell the "we can lower you interest rate" jive. I politely told him that I do not want these calls, and he said "Do you know how many times a day I hear that?". I said, are you getting smart with me? I want to talk with your supervisor. He said, "Yea, right!" Supposedly someone else got on the phone, and said "Yea?". I told hime that I am on the national do-not-call-register, want to be removed from his list, and do not want these calls. He replied, and I quote: "Ain't gonna happen, dude"!!! WTF. I was so pissed, I couldn;t enjoy my dinner.

I have aprogrammable phone system, of the type that some small businesses use... ya know the ones... press this for one thing, that for another. Well, I programmed my residential line to answer all calls, and play the recording to "press the connect code to complete your call". If they don't, it hangs up. Problem solved.
