Default Guys break into my truck and gun malfunctions

I wake up at 2:30 this morning to pee. I hear my grandson's little weenie dog barking like hell in back yard . I step in the garage to look out the window and see two guys in my truck that is in the driveway. I run to my bedroom and grab the trusty old 870 wing master. I slip out the back door and jack a shell in and pull the trigger and to my surprise the whole freaking barrel flies off the damn gun.
So I am standing 20 feet from two very surprised thugs, with half a shot gun, the barrel flew about 10 feet in front of me. I'm standing there trying to figure out what happened and what to do next. the first thing that comes to mind is attack with whats left of the gun so I'm beating the shit out of the thug closest to me with the stock and forearm and prying the police get there soon.
I get one of the guys down and hold him till the Sheriff shows up and they locate the other one about a mile down the road hiding in a barn.
Has anyone ever have this problem with Remington 870? The ring that connects barrel to pump action broke loose from the barrel.
Sorry if this is rambling and fragmented I am still very excited.

Damn crazy encounter. I used to have a Remington 11-87 that did something like that but the barrel didnt fly off. The spot welds that held on the ring that went around the magazine broke and I the barrel feel of.

So u were going to kill them for breaking into your truck? or was it a warning shot?

I like it - but the local DA's office may not have had a problem with that....

Wow, you are luckier than you realize.

Glad you were able to hold one for the police. Also happy for you legally that you had a malfunction. Would of love to of heard how you scattered their brains but then you would have a huge problem.

yeah, sounds like someone was watching out for you with that malfunction. you likely would have had a world of trouble if you connected. not sure what state you are in, but I am pretty sure that no state would allow you to shoot someone stealing a truck from your driveway.

I wonder if the thugs will bring a civil claim for assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

I own an 870 wingmaster that belonged to my Dad. He bought it the first year they came out, I believe he said 1950. I have had no problems with it. I will check mine out closely though.

Glad you are ok. Even happier that you stomped a mudhole in a thug. Good job.

You don't mention where you live but I'm pretty sure it is not legal to shoot someone for breaking in to your vehicle in any state.

You're lucky one of them didn't pull out a gun that works and shoot you.

In the future, just stay inside and call the police.

Good God. What a story!! You made my morning. Glad you are OK and justice served. Very curious if you were shooting to put a hole in one of them or scare the shit outta them.

A lot of arm chair lawyers....It was the darndest thing officer, I heard the dog barking so I went out to see what was going on....I caught two fellers breaking into my truck. The big one made an aggressive move towards me so I shot him....I was so scared.....

....sometimes it doesn't matter how pretty we get to an objective, the fact is that we got there.

disagree. be a man, go out and kick some ass.........granted it's dangerous, but it makes you feel good to take control of your own destiny, rather than cower in the kitchen.

However, next time (assuming a reliable weapon on your part) confront them and if you assess a deadly threat (rather than compliance or them fleeing), then and only then consider use of deadly force.

Officer, I pointed the gun at them and told them to get on the ground. They looked at me and the one on the left said he was going to take the gun away from and kill me with it. They both moved toward me and I fired until they were both down.

PS. Did the gun fire and the barrel blew off?
