Woman follows GPS, drives onto tracks; train strikes car

A Wilmington woman found out the hard way today that you can’t always trust your car’s GPS system, police said.
Amy Macchiarelli was driving east in Newark on West Main Street about 10:30 a.m. approaching the CSX railroad crossing when her GPS unit instructed her to turn left, Newark police Lt. Mark Farrall said.

When the 44-year-old woman did as instructed, she ended up on the railroad tracks where her 2010 Toyota Corolla got stuck just as a train was approaching.

Macchiarelli was able to get out of the car before an eastbound CSX train hit the vehicle from behind and dragged it about 100 feet down the tracks.

Farrall said the wreckage came to rest behind the Deer Park Tavern.

Macchiarelli was not injured, but she was cited for inattentive driving.

Traffic in the area was snarled for about 45 minutes while the roadway was closed.

Alcohol is not suspected in the crash.
