Default 95 on Easter Monday?

Any predictions on what the traffic will be like during the day from Richmond to NY on 95 on Easter Monday?

Leave early (4AM)? I've made the trip a hundred times and there's no GOOD day or time, some days and times are better than others. Heading toward NYC at the end of a holiday can be a mess. Do you have to go over the GWB?

What's Easter Monday?

You mean the day after Easter? That's just a regular work day, right?

I imagine traffic will be lousy like on any Monday.

I'd be tempted to go AROUND Richmond on I-295 (east side), get off I-295 onto Rt. 301 North (last I-295 exit beFORE I-95 North/South), follow Rt. 301 to Dahlgren, cross the Potomac into LaPlata, MD, and go from there.

Was on I-64, I-295, and I-95 today and saw at least 3 accidents and a MAJOR backup on I-95. They are also doing construction on I-95 NORTHBOUND - around Ashland - on WEEKDAYS, with BIG backups!

I live just NE of Richmond, off I-295, and I HATE traveling I-95 - Monday, Saturday, whatever - it's all a CRAPSHOOT on there!

Good luck - and take plenty of HEADACHE meds with you if you go I-95!

Regards,

Yes it is a reguar work day but a lot of people will be taking that day off I think, but a lot of those might be travelling. If I leave here around 4 then its richmind around 7:30, DC around 9:30 or something like that.

I'll look at that route around richmond.

Any long island guys on here?

4AM was an arbitrary number. Actually, you're better leaving here mid morning to miss most of the rush hours or leave in the late afternoon (better). I used to travel from here to CT on a regular basis and sometimes to LI (mother-in-law lived on the North Fork).

I always took I-295 around Richmond. It's been almost 10 yrs since I had to make that trip, so I'd have to look at a map to give "best" directions. Unless you travel at night (over the GWB after midnight), there's no good way to go. Coming back, try to go over the GWB by 6AM.

The last time I went over the GWB during the daytime, it took 2 hrs to get from the NJ side to the NY side and there were no accidents or any unusual traffic problems.

I drive 301 through dahlgren when I run up to our office in Alexandria. It is a pleasent drive and not bad at all. If you go that wasy, you will want to stop in Dahlgren to fill up at sheets or wawa. It is the last cheap gas you will see. I would opt for 301 over 95 if you are going to be to dc around 09:30. Just remember, MD has a ban on talking on cell phones and they enforce it.

If you go the I-295 route - I would - (around the EAST side of Richmond), you'll avoid a LOT of traffic! There IS some construction going on on I-295, JUST before you cross over the James - in both directions - for a new "exit" - on/off ramps. I think 1 lane may be closed (outside lane)? Still WAY less traffic than I-95.

There is a Cracker Barrel at the MECHANICSVILLE/TAPPAHANNOCK/Rt. 360 EAST exit (about 20mi. AFTER you cross the James) that has spots for boat/trailer/RV/bus parking.

JUST off the exit - stay in the RIGHT lane to the FIRST stoplight, turn RIGHT, and the Cracker Barrel is just down the road about 1/4mi. or less - ON the RIGHT.

ALSO, on the SAME road after taking the right - within 100yds. or so of the Cracker Barrel - is a Ruby Tuesday's (on the left), Taco Belle & Chick Fillet (on the right), and a Martin's grocery store (has a cafe area for eat-in, serves breakfast/lunch/diner).

After you leave the Cracker Barrel, it's only about 6-8mi. to the Rt. 301 NORTH exit, so the Cracker Barrel is a nice "stopping off" point.

I live about 4-5mi. from all of this and frequent it a LOT!

You didn't say if you were towing the boat or not? ;?

Have fun and have a SAFE trip!

I just returned to NJ from Key Largo and here is my take on I-95: in FL, road travels fast with no traffic, GA to NC/VA state line traffic is slow (for no apparent reason) but moves, VA is slow. Richmond area to DC/Balt to NJ via Del Mem Bridge...SUCKS BIG TIME. DE alone only has 10 miles of highway but after 20 years they can't get it completed, WTF?? NJ Turnpike is hell south of exit 8A, another construction nightmare...might be worth staying on 95 N through Phil to Trenton then cutting up Rt 1. All of 95 is under construction ALL THE TIME. Most of my travelong was early and late, so no rush hour traffic, but could have been holiday influenced.
