Default Ducks anyone??

Well I am sitting here waiting on my hunting buddy to take him on his first duck hunting trip. We are diehard deer hunters but to me once duck season gets here I loose a little interest in deer. Already shot 3 anyway.

Anyone else here duck hunting, we have a 5 day season right now that ends on Sunday and then it opens back up middle of Dec and runs until late Jan. Our hunting around here right now is mostly local/resident woodies and greenheads and geese. Later on we will get a few migratory birds if the weather up north turns cold.

Good luck to all the deer/duck hunters and be carefull in the woods/swamps.

My favorite prey to hunt. We marsh hunt in coastal Louisiana. Grey ducks (gadwall) are my favorite ducks. We kill a varity, but most of our bags consist of greys, teal, dosgris (scaup), spoon bills, pouldeau (coots) and summer french (mottled ducks.....very similar to the east coat's black duck). As far as eating my favorites are teal and pouldeau (coots). I don't think you yanks kill the coots, but I love em'!

Unfortunatley I was only able to make opening day (Nov 13th) due to job duties. My youngest brother has been hunting almost everyday since and they have been averaging 8 birds for 2 people hunting. Not bad for hunting public land.

We hunt the traditional Louisiana method of paddling a pirogue (canoe) to a "blind" made from roseau canes. Once the season wears on we leave the blinds and set out 4-8 decoys in small ponds and hide in the marsh grass. This is usually pretty effective.

Can't wait to get back to do some hunting!!! I'll be back at it Dec 5-6.

Good luck!!

......just noticed you not a yank! sorry.

I will hunt pretty hard during the next season. I hunt in SE NC, and there are very few migratory ducks here at this time. Plenty of wood ducks, but I can't get excited about rising at 0 dark thirty just to shoot the 15 minute wood duck flight. Later in the season we will get mallards, gadwalls, widgeon, black ducks, and ringnecks but not in great numbers. Occasionally we will see a few pintails and bluebills. Can't wait for the December season.

I like to hunt wood ducks on the Cape Fear river. I paddle my kayak up feeder streams and jump-shoot ‘em. It’s pretty exciting cause your always on the move, and now that I’ve done it several years I have some favorite spots to look forward to. After paddling for 4 hours it’s a blast to flush a flock of 10 to 20 birds! The only downside is I rarely see anything but wood ducks. Good luck, chip.
