Default Cop Shows - LEOs

I am a murder mystery (and Police Procedure) novel addict. I remember at one time some LEO survey said One Adam 12 was the most realistic TV police show.

I like Without a Trace and Criminal Minds and Bones occasionally but know they can't be that real - especially criminal minds...I also like the older Law and Orders (Fontaine and Lenny). What I don't like is about L and O is they (and the prosecutors) always seem to have to sorta break the law to get the bad guys . I think this sends a very bad message. I also don't like or am maybe jealous of that pompous ass Jack who I am sure is screwing all the young gorgeous ADAs

I know we have Cracker and other LEOs. (1)What cop shows are the most realistic and (2) which one do you like best?

Grunt,
I really like Southland, many things in that show are pretty realistic. I also always liked NYPD Blue, it was less realistic but I always enjoyed the quick wits the characters display. At work I am pretty hard on my co workers and they are on me at times. We have a saying "Dont come to work with your feelings on your sleeve." as sometimes its like a bunch of jackals and rank doesn't matter. The Chief, Lt, Sgt. and everybody is fair game. Course I am a day shift guy and most everybody is pretty senior and there are courtesies extended to us that a rookie shift would not get...

I find very few cop shows that I like that are on now. However I am on the fed side of the business mostly boring ATFP paper work survey side of the house. I do a ton of windshield time and really enjoy books on audio. I enjoy Michael Connelly' harry Bosch series, Jon sandford' Virgil Flowers series and my favorite albiet unrealistic James Lee Burke' Dave Rebicheuax series all very good but frustrating waiting for new books to come out.
PS, I grew up in the 80's so I am an old Miami Vice homer

Third Watch hands down the best cop/firefighter/Paramedic show ever.

"The first 48" is the most realistic.
"Cops" is realistic, but politically correct.

Those are almost documentary type of shows. I would not think that is what Grunt was referring to, but my wife loves "The first 48" or the ID channel. I get home and have to remind her I see that sheeet all day long and want to watch something else..

Bruce,
I bet you watch Reno 911 for the leg action, dont you..

I gave up on that show many years ago for just that same reason.

Too "touchy-feely"...

The truth is the truth. For some, it's too tough to swallow. That's their problem, not mine...

I treat all TV shows for what they are. An hour of entertainment...

None of the regular network shows are even close to 100% reality. That fact is proven by the way they can solve any type of crime within 60 minutes!

Again, they're entertainment...

While we're at it, how about Chip's, T.J. Hooker (where every episode had a "salt & pepper" crime duo! ) and Police Woman.

But I respected Columbo! He never packed a weapon or used handcuffs!

A few of my favorites were Hill St. Blues, the early episodes of NYPD Blue and of course, Barney Miller! (Who could forget Fish! )

There are several that have pretty good consultants. I always liked the Law and Order, early years. Not that it was the most realistic, but had the most realistic feel.

Homicide:Life on the Streets was another good one, a L&O spin off.

It would be easier to mention the least realistic, Bones, CSI, or anything with a psychic in it.

Ya, Jim Rockford was the best. But my current vote goes for Dexter.

Not much leg action on that show - only "conduct unbecoming a police officer" - and a LOT of it!

I guess "Dingle" has the best legs on the force, given his uniform.

Funny azz show - seems to be in reruns on ? channel. Hard to "find" it sometimes.
