Default More than 25% of Kids in USA Take Prescription Drugs...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...editorsPicks_1

More than a quarter of U.S. kids and teens are taking a medication on a chronic basis, according to Medco Health Solutions Inc., the biggest U.S. pharmacy-benefit manager with around 65 million members. Nearly 7% are on two or more such drugs, based on the company's database figures for 2009.

No offense but - I don't believe it. Or maybe I don't want to. If so what a waste. And if so, The parents need some education and the kids need some outdoors time.

I think the number is HIGHER. At least in NJ it sure is. I would say almost half are on some kind of ADHD or other mind-control (whatever the buzz-word is) drug. Zombie-ville. Never mind all the obese kids that are on a host of other garbage.

I bet asthma drugs and allergy drugs account for a very large share.

while there are many great shams perpetuated on the great people of this great national, the pharma industry may be the worst of all...

they have zero interest in the well being of their customers and are merely interested in selling drugs, regardless of their effect.

they are very fond of treating symptoms, rather then the root cause of disease. these drugs do no cure anything, they simply mask the symptoms.

the last doctor i went to (3 years ago) had 3 different drug reps come visit while i was in the waiting room, last time ill ever go there.

educate and take responsibility for yourself and your body.

All 3 of my kinds were supposedly diagnosed with ADD and were prescribed Ritalin. None ever took it and a few minutes talking with their teacher seemed to cure all their ADD symptoms
.

3 years ago we switched doctors because my wife got into a spat with our old primary care physician. (Long story}

On my first visit to the new doctor his first question was "What prescription drugs do you take?"

He seemed to be in shock when I told him I didn't take any and he then rattled off a list of what I should be taking.

Needless to say, that was my first and last visit.

We had a thread about this recently -- it didn't end well. Short story: People would rather take a pill instead of fix the problem.

GREAT for you!! Did you also go on ratemds.com and review the doctor so that others would be warned? I've reviewed dozens... good and bad. It's a wonderful site!

And this would be the fault of drug companies, how? They're in business to provide a product and make money. If you want something different, vote for Obama again. Not sure what you'll get, but you can bet it will be a change ...

I believe this, if not think that the percentages are a little low. Some parents need to be slapped because they think just because their kid is active they need to take them to the doctor and get them on ritalin to calm them down. My neighbor is a perfect example, the boy is now a freshman in high school and has been taking prescription medicine since he was in 2nd or 3rd grade. I remember stopping by to say hello and the kid would be laying on the couch zoned out watching tv looking like a zombie after taking his meds. I said to myself WTF he is like 7 or 8 years old looking like a person you see escape from a funny farm. All this new crap doctors want to prescribe to you all just so they can make more money.

These drugs werent around when my parents grew up and they turned out just fine......don't get why kids now a days need them now.....

Somehow interjecting Obama, aside (read: what's the point?)... You're right. If people would just stand-up and say NO to their Doctor... this wouldn't be a problem. The real issue is that people are sheep and are easily led.

Yes, very true!

It use to amaze me everytime I would go to a school function and see the meds being handed out to the kids!

Peanut allergy's, gluten issues, ADD, etc... etc... etc...

One of my younger son's best friends is on two different types of meds. When we invite him out for a trip in our motorhome, my wife has to monitor him and give him the meds that he needs. Zombie sounds about right...

Thankfully, our pediatrician was "old school" and didn't push that crap on any of my kids!

And guess what? All four of them have turned into healthy human beings!

Imagine that!!!

Absolutely, asthma is a huge problem and to be fair, there are a lot more medicines available and a lot more cases of asthma these days.

None of my kids has it or takes any meds thankfully.

One thing I have learned is that there are a lot of kids with real medical issues. Our daughter was diagnosed with a relatively mild case of a neurological disorder 12 years ago when she was 6. The need for pediatric specialists is much greater than I ever imagined.

She also takes a non-stimulant prescription for ADHD. In her case, this was life changing. The tough thing is sorting out the over-subscribers from those who these meds truly help. She's not a zombie, not overweight, an A-B student in AP courses and has lots of friends.

We have 4 kids and I am constantly saddened by the amount of kids that we see that are on add drugs and that are being raised by single mothers who are too busy with their own selves to give the kids attention.

I'm surprised the number isn't higher given kids a are couch potatoes and the amount of junk food they eat....the problem funnels down to very poor parental control!
