FYI - going by the number of ships operated by a military branch... The largest navy ever seen in the world was the US Army with over 5000 transports, tugs and tankers, at the end of WWII.
Kamper,

I had a Navy Captain tell me one time that "the Navy had more airplanes than the Airforce and the Army had more boats than the Navy". The airplane part is easy, but I could never quite comprehend the boat part. Now it makes more sense ... in past tense.

And here's a footnote to that:

My uncle who skippered fishing vessels joined the Army during WWII and he served with the Army Corp of Engineers. Due to his fishing background they made him a skipper of a tug boat and during the "D-Day" landings his tug was shot at while attempting to re-float landing craft. His tug also assisted in towing the "Mullberries" across the channel while building the temporary harbor.
