I've been many times and always had fun. I try to step away from the crowd during the parade (how many times do you really need to see the shriners race around in those go-karts). Mini bottles were invented for events like this.

We live fairly close but don't go because of the crowd. I am not a real big crowd fan. There are some smaller oyster roasts on the Northern Neck that we attend on occasion though. We use to enjoy going up the the St. Mary's oyster festival but haven't been there for years.

Default Getting ready

I'll be there Thursday, leave Sunday morning. Taking a motorhome and have a great parking space in town by the rescue squad/market.

Have gone for years, usually by boat, but that has become a hassle with the water police and less friendly marinas that won't let small boats tie up on the end of the boat houses/finger piers.

Thursday night is laid back locals night, like Friday used to be. Friday is still pretty laid back/dance/band and not too crowded. Saturday I'll eat breakfast in town, get a couple of BBQs from Bully's and head back to the RV and eat my own oysters...and stay out of the crowds.

It really is much more enjoyable when you stay either in an RV or on a boat and don't have to worry about battling the crowds or how much you've had to drink.

We spend a lot of time at the dock, and buy boats are always fun to tour. The various bands around town are fun too. I'll be heading there at 10am Thursday!

But yeah, I will intentionally miss the Fire truck parade on Friday and the Shriners on Saturday. The kids are staying home.

Oh, to answer the OP's question, it can be fun, but if you park across the creek/bridge, pay $20 for parking and walk around aimlessly, it isn't a lot of fun.
I guess most people that pay 20 bucks for parking don't know you can park right behind the fire house for 10 or 15 (depending on day) if you come in a little earlier on the other side of town. Saturday from 11-3 is the worst time to go, but that's when the crowds roll in and I head back to the RV.
