ORLANDO, Fla. Four Orlando police officers are on leave Wednesday, pending the investigation of a deadly shooting
, according to the Orlando Police Department.
Police said officers shot 21-year-old Acrifa Soman to death. The shooting happened at the intersection of Hiawassee and Colonial Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
Officer said Soman pulled a gun on them. A gun was found on the ground after the shooting.
Detectives believe the man robbed a Game Stop store in Metrowest before the incident.

Officers on administrative leave are Paul Evancoe, Herb Todd, Cedrick Hinkles and Bryan Fischer.
Police said just because the four officers were placed on leave, it does not mean all four opened fire.
Witness said they heard multiple gunshots.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

Soman's mother said her son joined the Army, got a mechanic's degree and stayed at home caring for his little sister. She said she can't believe the 21-year-old committed a robbery, but she said officers didn't have to kill him.
"He has a clean slate, never been in trouble before," Soman's mother, Joyce Passley, said.
Passley said Soman wasn't the violent robber police made him out to be. She said he graduated from West Orange High School and had big plans to serve his country.
The distraught mother said he should have been on his way to pick up his 8-year-old sister from school Tuesday afternoon, when Orlando police said Soman robbed the Game Stop at gunpoint.
Passley said she believes there had to be another way to take her son into custody.

"Tase him and bring him in. If he do what they say he do, he pay for it. Don't kill him like that. Don't kill him in the street," she said.

I went to West Orange High school!! And plans to serve ones country and actually serveing ones country are completely different. How do you join the army get a degree in mechanic's(i'm guessing he just finished his ait) and then deceide to go rob a game stop? I agree you draw on a cop you get whats coming to you. taseing him at that point is just plain retarded.

I sure hope not. This scenario played out the only way it could. Those guys have the right to protect themselves from that trash. Sad story, certainly, but unfortunately justified IMO in spite of what mom says. Where was he headed next? To rob a place my kid works at? Sorry if that sounds selfish, but I haven't been in that situation and certainly won't judge them for protecting me and making extremely tough decisions.

Unfortunately there are more than enough opportunities to criticize police/government because of their actions but if the facts are as reported, I can not see how this can be construed as one of those times. ;?

Do you really expect a mother to say that her child needed killing?

What was it that the lake county Sherrif said when he was asked why his officers shot a guy like 60 something times?

Something like " we ran out of ammo"?

Was it Lake or Polk county? I thought it was Polk county that did that?

Florida police kill suspect in deputy's slaying

September 29, 2006

Police said Friday they shot and killed a suspected cop killer who was armed and who failed to raise both hands when Florida SWAT officers stumbled upon him hiding in thick brush.
"Ladies and gentlemen, God will be the judge and jury this time," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd during a news conference.
The suspect, on the run since Thursday afternoon, had dug under a fallen oak tree and covered himself with brush, Judd said, only about 75 yards from where police said he killed a sheriff's deputy.

"I was standing on top of him before I ever saw him," Judd said a SWAT team member told him.
The SWAT team members ordered the suspect to show his hands and he made only one hand visible, the sheriff said. When SWAT officers removed a cloth over the man's other hand they saw a weapon and began shooting.
"SWAT team members shot and killed the man who killed our deputy," Judd said, adding that the man was shot "numerous times."
"The killer chose his end. He chose his end because he didn't show both hands," the sheriff said.
Judd said police found a 45-caliber handgun believed to have been taken from the dead sheriff's deputy.
Judd said police still have not been able to establish the identity of the man who was shot, but expressed confidence that he was their suspect in Thursday's traffic stop that resulted in the death of Deputy Vernon Matthew "Matt" Williams and his police dog "Diogi."
Judd said, "It's still a sad day for law enforcement and certainly for the sheriff's office."
"We have no idea whether or not [the suspect] shot [at police] but we saw him and we saw the gun," Judd said. "We don't have the details and we shot numerous times."
Hundreds of police were swarming "through every square inch" of thickly overgrown Florida woods Friday before the announcement.
Police insisted they would not rest until they captured the man, whom they suspect of killing a sheriff's deputy and wounding another during a routine traffic stop. They thought he was involved in a narcotics ring.
Williams was a 12-year veteran of the department.
Deputy Doug Speirs was shot in the leg and is expected to make a full recovery. He was treated and released at a hospital.
Judd said the suspect's body would be examined during an autopsy.
Before the suspect was shot Friday, Judd said, "We've run dozens of leads through the night. He's armed, we know he's very dangerous." He said police have "significant investigative leads."
Judd said police had been scouring between 75 and 150 acres of woods

A Florida gunman, who shot and killed an officer and his police dog, was shot at 110 times and hit 68 times when SWAT team members found him the following day hiding in the woods under a tree trunk and he refused to show his hands. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the fugitive would have been shot more, but the SWAT team ran out of bullets. AWESOME!!!!
