Default Question for cops... or for those who ended locked upp at one point in life....

long story short...Last June, I had to bail somebody up... That person was here on vacations driving with an international drivers license after drinking some beers. You know where this is going....
Under my worthless advice, he took the test (the street one, not the blowing one) and he end up passing the night in jail and I bailed him up the next day.
Now I'm geting a letter from something called "Tri county refund services" telling me they have a refund from a bail bond that i posted.

I do not know if this is a government agency giving me my money back (too good to be true...) or it's a private company trying to sell me something (most likely....)

Either way I wanted to check it with you guys.. any advice????

Default Bail

If you posted bail, they showed up and did their thing with the judge, paid their fines, costs etc, You will get a refund of the bail you posted if you posted a cash bond. You put up the cash to insure they showed up, which evidently they did, so you get your money back. I've had to bail out a few friends and that is how it works if you posted a cash bond rather than going to a bail bondsman where you paid something like 10% of their bond as a premium on essentially an insurance policy saying they would show up.

that's the funny thing... he never showed up.
I posted a cash bond... didn't go to the bail bondsman....

He was here on vacations ... I got him to go to a lawyer... and the last thing I knew is that everything was going fine, until I found out that he went back to his country because the lawyer.. well I better leave it there....

Since that time I've been expecting to receive something on the mail for him to show up in court, and I was planing to show up to the judge and explain what happened, but I never got a thing about a court date, until this letter for the bail refund...

Did you try calling the number on the letter? Maybe that will tell you what you need to know.

Maybe he/the lawyer squared up with the authorities and never contacted you? ;?

Is it possible they threatened to revoke his passport for failure to appear on a DWI? ;?

Interesting situation though

Or they declined to prosecute due to some technicality before they even knew he split.

Loooong ago I got a busted nose (assault) and a busted rear window(property damage) in a case of road rage, and the local DA wouldn't even bother trying to extradite the SOB's from the next state.

Maybe not but rest assured he has an active warrant and every time he or and member of his family driving his car gets their tag number run they will be late for wherever they are going
He also will have a hard time getting a decent job as most employers do some sort of background check.
