Default ZTR mowers.. TORO vs Ferris???

I'm looking at 2 nice mowers... both with kawa 21hp engine and both look very well taken care of..

One is a Toro Z-Master 52" (commercial?) and the other one is a 2007 Ferris 48"

The Toro has a bigger deck, closer to my area, center of gravity is lower and I assume will be easier to find service.

he Ferris, seems to be tougher, better constructed, has suspension all around, and it doesn't looks as flimsy as the TORO...

HAve you guys had any experience with Ferris??? are those good??? what would you compare it to??? TORO??? JD??? SCAG or Dixie chopper???

THANKS in advance...

I have a friend that has a Toro ZTR, he likes it. He hopes to be able to buy a Ferris next year. He says the Ferris is better made and rides better.

I have a 27HP diesel Hustler in the old form (3400 model). Talk about rides nice, it weighs 1800lbs.

If I were to buy a used ZTR, my first concerns would be how it was used and how it was maintained. I think I'd give Ferris a hard look. Also, how close is the nearest service?

The difference between 48" and 53" is negligible. Go do some mowing with each, see how they feel. Do some real mowing, test drive them with same scrutiny as you would a boat.

You might look at Dixon ZTR's as well. http://www.dixon-ztr.com/node2326.aspx?nid=16564

Depends on how much grass you need to cut.

I had a rep give me a brochure for a Ferris once, and I liked the idea of the suspension but nobody I know has one of these. Toro is a good mower, a 21 hp on a 52" is underpowered though. I have a 50" Exmark with a 27 hp and it will bog at times (with mulching kit). In my opinion a 21 hp Kaw will not last long on a 52" My Wright 36" has a 17hp Kaw and I wish I had the 21hp, and thats on a 36"
How many hours on the motors? Once you start getting 2000 plus, especially on a Kaw, your on borrowed time. A 21hp on a 52", I would say 1500 hrs and its about time to replace.

Ferris mowers are really nice, the suspension is a great thing and 21hp on a 48 or 52'' deck will suffice, you aren't mowing big fields just your yard. Personally I would take the ferris over the toro but then again I don't really like toro ZTR's, overrated in my book.

One thing to remember about commercial mowers, parts can be unbelievably expensive. The gearbox for my mower deck needs to be replaced, $1500 for the part alone. I'm looking for a used deck with a good gearbox, should be about $2500. While looking for parts to repair the ZTR, I bought a new 26 HP (Kohler) lawn tractor with 54" deck for around $3000.

exmarks do not have gear boxes as most decks are belt driven off the crank

YES!!! I was looking at some Dixie chopper, and happened to talk to my lawn mower guy who uses one... that's exactly what he said, any little thing in a commercial will be big bucks...
I've found a John Deere F687 ztr with only 185 hrs 48" 7iron deck that looks pretty good in pictures... is the one with the front deck

something like this

another 1 and a half drive to see it.. hopefully is worth it...
