Default What is the deal with checking CASH

I get pissed every time I go to pay for something with cash and they have to look at it, mark it with one of those pens and now they have a damn machine to scan it to make sure it is not counterfeit

I understand not wanting to get ripped off but I am 48 yrs old and to my knowledge have never even seen a counterfeit bill. We did get one in my office about 10 years ago where a con artist had cut the corners off a $100 bill and fixed them to a $1 but other than that never seen anything like this.

Is it that easy to counterfeit US Currency, by the way I hate using debit or credit cards

Just because you are 48 years old does not mean you cannot unknowingly be passing on a counterfeit bill.

When the merchant tries to deposit that bill the bank will catch it and the merchant is out the money.

I cannot blame them for checking.

When they give you change back...take out YOUR counterfeit pen and check THEIR money.

Actually it is pretty easy to conterfeit money based on visible screening but alot of the security that goes into our money takes specials tools (if nothing more than that pen) to see. Ever see someone pull a 1/16 x 3 in strip out from the inside on a bill?

BTW: I own a printing company and could easily produce $20's that you couldn't see the difference from real, but I can't do anything to make those pens mark the fake $20's properly.

Besides, all these 20ish year old cashiers rarely see cash anymore, they don't know what there looking at!!!!

What exactly do those pens do anyway? Just curious.

Yeah, what is the big deal with the merchant checking for fake money so they don't get ripped off. Geez, you'd think they would have something better to do during that second and a half it takes to swipe a pen across the bill.

I use to manage a retail store and there is more counterfeit money out there than you may realize. Most counterfeiters will use small bills because not as many people check those, of course they didn't use to, that has changed. Given the technology of today's printing machines and laser home computers you can understand how easy it is for the crooks to print out 10 to 20k in an afternoon.

Actually, until recently -- I think Aquanet hair spray fools those pens. (American Greed Television show told me so) ...

Couldn't the counterfeiters make counterfeit-counterfeit pens?

Guess my question is do they really come across that much counterfeit money, trust I do not want to see anyone ripped off but I have never seen any "funny money" and probably would not know if I did. My secretary told me that it is pretty easy to tell when compared to the real thing(she used to work in a bank).

Anyone here ever had money rejected by merchants or what do they do if it does not pass the "pen" test. I also noticed one the other day that has some type of electronic scanner that tests it also;?;?

Good idea. Just picked up a pen detector on ebay for 5 dollars. I am going to start doing just that.
