Default Personal Property Tax in NC

I'm buying a boat and want to homeport her in Beaufort, NC (Carteret County). Does anyone know what the personal property tax is there and how it is levied?

I'm buying the boat in Florida (used) and want to homeport in Beaufort.

I'm in the county and not the city. Carteret County taxes are 42 cents per hundred.

ConchCruzer, seahawg is right on but if you look on the Carteret web site they state that there are 31 different tax districts. County, municipal, sand(?), etc. really depends on where you are thinking about buying.

Thanks for the replies. I think I stated my question poorly though. The situation is that I live in Raleigh (only the last 3 months or so) and I'm going to homeport the boat in Beaufort. The boat is going to be a cruising liveaboard. I understand there is no sales tax on used boats but there is some kind of personal property tax. Is this the .42 per 100?

Thanks again,

That's right. You pay the personal property tax where the boat resides.

You would list it with the county by January 31 2005. You would not owe a tax this year if you did not own it on 1/31/2004.
I was contacted by the county on our documented boat because I didn't list it last January. I was under the impression that it had to be located in this state most of the year. Our boat was in FL till March of 2004 but because I am a resident of Craven County even if the boat comes back to NC for 1 day, I would owe the tax for 2004 plus penalties.
Sucks, but live and learn
