A Summerville man celebrating his 23rd birthday died early Thursday after he apparently tried to “slap the train” as it traveled past a local bar.
Justin Helton was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining multiple fractures and massive blunt force injuries, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said.
Nisbet said Helton was at the Ice House Bar & Grill on East Doty Avenue about 1:46 a.m. when he told someone he was going to “slap the train.”
Witnesses told Summerville police officers that Helton had been drinking throughout the night and appeared to be in a good mood until he had an argument with an ex-girlfriend, an incident report says.
The woman told police that Helton became upset and went to the oncoming train to touch it with his hand when his foot became stuck in the track in front of the train. She said it did not appear as though he jumped in front of the train, according to the report.
Another witness said she watched the incident from the bar’s front porch. She said Helton ran out of a car and ran to the edge of the grass near the railroad tracks. He was standing with his arms spread out and the wind was whipping his shirt. The witness said it appeared as though he knocked the side of the train and didn’t get back up, it says.
Nisbet said it appears Helton was sucked into the train. He said the train conductor was not aware of what happened and had to be stopped further down the tracks for the investigation.
It was the second incident involving a train near the Ice House Bar & Grill in just more than two months.
Christopher Ryan Coleman told police in May that he was “sucked under” the train while walking along the railroad tracks and texting his wife.
“I didn’t really believe in God until tonight,” Coleman said at the time.
Coleman was treated for injuries to his knee and fingers before he was charged with trespassing on a railroad right of way. Police were not able to verify that he was actually under the train.

There maybe a "buffer" law in place now or maybe there was one put into place in the recent past. I've never given it a second thought. I think we assumed common sense would rule the day, but it seems those days are long gone.

I work on a RR and this kind of stuff happens more then you know. Often it gets covered up or buried in the middle of the paper, knowone likes bad press even if it's not your fault.
Beer muscles and beer brains, what can you do. I feel the most bad for the motorman/operator as he/she more then likly saw it coming and could do nothing about it.

The bar is not "next to the tracks". It is across a two lane street with parking spaces on both sides. Easy 40-50 yards distance between them. Just another drunk doing what drunks do best....stupid sh*t.;?
Witness says he ran from car toward train, not from bar, after mixing it up with ex. She probably told him to jump in front of the train and he said I'll show you.

The self-proclaimed world's smartest pot head apparently thinks the Darwin award is a worthy goal, because he continues to strive for that title, despite multiple failures.
His video starts by showing his large yacht controlled by autopilot pointed at a gas dock next to a military base, two hours away, moving right along at his 40 knot velocity.
Then he leaves the helm and climbs up and down, fore and aft, all over the vessel, leaning over the sides, to capture every angle of his yacht underway.
The kicker is his family is already tucked in bed in this o-dark-30 video.
So if he fell overboard the debate is what to award. Would it be an act of terrorism, if the military scrambles w/ gattling guns to shred his boat / family? Would it be a Darwin, if they find him bobbing alive the next morning? Would it be a criminal negligence, for loss of life and property?
Statistics show that the last words for 70% of Darwin winners is: "look at this". Those are the words of this $6M mansion trash prior to 99% of these brilliant ideas.
Most of the replies are to egg him on for more videos. Please put the camera into a floating baggie first.

Yep, he gets the Darwin award for today!
I'm sure his survivors will quickly file suit against the RR though. They always do...
Here's a hint: It's virtually impossible to get killed by a train if you stay away from the tracks!
Yes, it REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE!!!
One less dumb-azz NIMROD in the world to worry about...

Finalist dies at world sauna championships
August 8, 2010 8:28 a.m. EDT
Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy, left, and Timo Kaukonen during Saturday's final.
(CNN) -- A competitor has died and another is in hospital following a tragic end to the World Sauna Championships in southern Finland.
Russian Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy died Saturday after taking part in the final of a competition in which contestants are required to withstand rising temperatures for as long as possible.
Finnish finalist Timo Kaukonen was also taken to hospital for treatment, organizer Ossi Arvela said in a statement posted on the event's website.
Images of the contest showed Ladyzhenskiy and Kaukonen sitting side by side in the sauna. Both contestants can then be seen lying on the ground, apparently doused in water. Ladyzhenskiy appears to be suffering from severe skin burns.
"The event was interrupted immediately after the accident. Competition organization grieves these sad events," Avela said.
Finnish police and organizers are investigating the incident, Arvela said. But he said first aid personnel had been in place and all competitors taking part in the contest had provided doctor's certificates. "All the rules were followed," he said.
The World Sauna Championships take place annually in the town of Heinola.
