Default Frickin' CA Considers the U.S. Flag Graffiti!!!

Un-frickin-believable!!!

Once again, the wonderful state of CA bites the big one!

Just after 9-11, three patriotic men painted an image of the U.S. flag on a concrete slab along one of our main freeways in the Bay Area. It was up along a hillside, quite a ways up from the roadway.

Well, after almost 10 years, someone felt the need to question the images' location and who actually owned the property (the concrete slab).

Guess what? The slab belonged to CalTrans (state of CA).

Well, since CalTrans has a "zero tolerance" for graffiti (Ha! What a joke that is! Has anyone driven on our freeways and NOT seen any graffiti???), some NIMROD at CalTrans made the decision to order the image of the flag painted over.

This week, CalTrans did just that! The image of the U.S. flag has been painted over and is now just a drab gray concrete pad once again.

Happy Fourth of July weekend state of CA!!!

Frickin' NIMRODS!!!

I would love to know the name of the individual that made that decision. Well, at least his or hers' LAST name...

There is no doubt in my mind that this action is in response to all of this fifth of May crap involving red, white and blue t-shirts that was in the news last month.

TOTAL BULLCRAP if you ask me!

I bet if it was the image of a mexican flag, they wouldn't dare remove it out of fear of "offending" someone!

This country is heading for a revolution and no one should be surprised when it happens...

Zero tolerance means zero thinking, zero common sense.

Thank god. All those stupid flags on every highway overpass and flying off every d-bag's car windows were annoying as cr&p. Like you weren't a patriot unless you flew the flag and spouted "I pledge allegiance" every day. I'm sure if someone painted something on your concrete wall that you didn't ask for or want to maintain, then you'd paint over it too.

Or were you suggesting California should raise taxes in order to properly maintain a gigantic mural of a flag......?

No one asked California to do anything to maintain it.

"Thank god." Did you mean God?

Hopefully that portion of this country will break off and fall into the Pacific. I just pray it takes Pelosi with it!

No, I meant god. Little letters. I was thanking the god of no-more-grafitti. Then tonight I'm going to thank the god of Miller High Life. Maybe the god of scotch. Tomorrow the god of fishing.

Good god, I have a lot of gods to thank....

Noone asked Cali to maintain it, nor did they ask Cali if they could install it. Obviously 9 years of neglect turned it into an eyesore. So maybe Cali was doing the same thing as decommissioning a flag. They couldn't burn the paint, so they did the next best thing. Thank god an old, tattered, dirty image of the flag has been put to rest!

I bet it cost them just as much money to paint over it as it would have to repaint the flag.

Apparantly some demonstrate their patriotism with their deeds and not their words or symbolism.

To date 588 Californians have given all in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A couple of articles about it online. As usual, there is often more to the story than what is told on THT.

The flag muralists say they plan to approach Caltrans for permission to repaint the flag in time for the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
A Caltrans spokesman said they can apply through proper procedures for what they call transportation art

http://www.ktvu.com/news/24117983/detail.html

Noda, 36, of Dublin, said he understood why Caltrans took it down — it wasn't in such good shape the last time he saw it, and vandals had tagged the painting.

Neither of the above two sources is where I got the initial information from (radio show).

Though one fact that I neglected to put in was that other anonymous admirers of the flag did the maintenance on it over the years.

I guess up until recently...

At least other forms of media have picked up on the story.

I'd like to see the 35' image of our nations flag return.

Legitimately or not...

Yeah, that's the problem with a lot of those radio shows. They leave out a lot of details.

Well, hopefully it gets painted again for the 10th anniversary. That would be nice.

Actually, Arnold is pizzed off over the situation as well. He made a statement over the w/e (I guess... I was up at Lake Tahoe for the holiday w/e, so I missed his exact statement and heard about it on the drive home earlier today) saying that CalTrans should NOT have painted over the 35' image of the U.S. flag.

Arnold sounds like the good guy as it relates to this fiasco...

SUNOL, CAlif. -- Angered by California Department of Transportation removal of an American flag mural from a highway hillside, two men have painted a replacement in time for the Fourth of July celebrations.

Steve Giordano and Jim Gallagher scaled the hillside on Saturday and had the flag back in place for Sunday’s Bay Area Independence Day celebrations.

There was no word from Caltrans whether or not the new rendition would be removed.

On Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was unhappy that Caltrans had painted over the original mural. In a prepared statement, Schwarzenegger called the flag patriotic and meaningful.
He said that to remove the flag, "only a few days before we celebrate our independence and reflect on the freedoms we are lucky enough to enjoy in America is unconscionable. I extend my apologies to the artists whose mural inspired drivers along 680 for over eight and a half years.

"Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Andrea McCarthy said the state Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, which oversees Caltrans, "will work with the community and the artists to try to reach a resolution."
