Default Dear Hewlett Packard - Oh, how I hate your printers

I hate your software, which is in invasive and takes up more disc space than decent programs.
I don't need 6 new shortcuts on my desk top to run a damn printer.
I don't need your HP Toolbox and I don't want automatic upgrades for products that suck anyway.
I don't want ink cartridges that expire on some arbitrary date, rather than running dry.
I don't need a printer that will pickup 5 sheets of paper at once and print parts of what I want to print on one sheet onto five sheets instead.
I don't want a printer that just sits and blinks at me when I want to print something.
I want a printer that, well, just prints. It does not need to scan, fax, copy, make coffee and work as an alarm clock.
I want a printer that works on a cable, so when the microwave turns on, the printer does not go crazy.
I want ink to cost less than Crown Royal.

I smiled as I walked away from the trash can, which is where my five month old HP printer now resides. Should it have gone to E-waste? No, they don't take fecal matter.

HP really pissed me off when they didn't make a driver for Vista or 7 for my Laserwriter. Great machine, printed black only and one fill lasted the 3 or 4 years I had it on my XP machines.

As for the 4in1 printers, Ditto ditto ditto... I think they try to update you 3x a day. I just put in a new computer and can't get mine to scan now.. If I don't figure it out in the next 15 minutes it to is going to printer heaven, or is it printer hell?

I believe it is printer hell, I use an HP printer wireless through my house, so hard, its been great, knock on wood, mind you that I am a college student, so I print a lot, constantly buying ink which sucks, and yeah, you can almost buy a new printer for the cost of ink these days.

I tossed all of ours a couple of years ago. My experience was that HP went from the best to worst almost overnight. I bought a Brother and it's the best printer we've ever used, including the old warhorse HP Laserjets from 10 years ago.

I have fought an HP Officejet for over a year, if this is the best they have to offer it's poor, every week it's a different set of problems. Their software sucks. When this ink runs out I'm trashing it and finding another brand of wireless printer, anything has to be an improvement.

FWIW, don't buy Lexmark expecting any better. Similar bloated, half ass software.

Funny, I like Lexmark. At least their ink cartridges don't dry out just sitting around like other brands, and print quality has always been good for a low price printer. I also have a cheap laser jet. Paid $90.00 for it two years ago and is still on its first toner cartridge. Both better and cheaper to run than the ink sucking brand they replaced.

1000% agree. Cr@p like this are what gives PC a bad name. I spent an hour uninstalling a gargantuan printer driver from my laptop last week. My wife bought some pos hp printer and I figured ok, I'll try it. I could never turn off my laptop without it hanging up unable to end program on the HP garbage.

I hate inkjets and I should have told her to just return it, or throw it out, I think she got it free with her new computer actually.

Dammit, now I m going to be in a foul mood all day.

Hmmm
My HP Deskjet 5150 must be 5 years old, and it's just like a Timex. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Of course you pay more for the ink than you did for the printer. That has been the HP business model for years.

WTG Kern - You should have taken the Louisville Slugger to it before it hit the can

Stopped buying Inkjet years ago - especially HP.

Buy laser only now. Always had good luck with HP lasers.

Switched to Dell lasers for some reason and finding they are noisy and go thru toner cartridges very fast

good question

What printers to you all recommend

I have a 3500 series several years old just printer that works fine and the all in one 4500 seems good for copying but used more ink. HP seemed to me to have the cheapest ink cartridges

So what do you allrecommend for about 100 bucks or less

I have the HP 4600 in FL and the 5600 here in NJ, never really had issues with either until I downloaded the software 3x so far on my new Win 7 desktop and it won't scan. Odd, no issues with the 4600 hoked up to Win 7 on the laptop. WTF? I use my scanner 3x as often as the print.

Regarding ink cartridges, I found that Costco offers excellent prices but they don't carry everything in their outlets. However, if you go to their website you can find almost anything and they ship free. Got mine the 2nd day and at a far better price than anyone else.

HP laser is the way to fly. Use little toner and last forever. I still use an old 1320. Quiet, reliable and crisp.

My HP 6988 came very close to getting a bullet Monday this week. It finally started to work after I reloaded the driver for the 8th time.

The next time it screws up will be it's last. It will not be the first electronic device that has met a bullet or beaten to death with a framing hammer. I mailed the hammered piece back to the manufacturer.

I had problems with my HP 6400 and HP 7500 until I got a new Win 7 laptop. I did not load or download any printer software for the new laptop. I plugged in the printer and let the laptop find and download from the internet. both scan and print now.

if you loaded the software yourself suggest you remove and let the desktop decide what is needed. good luck . . .
