Default Just canceled PCB FL vacation

Did something tonight I did not want to do but we canceled our condo rental at Panama City Beach Fl for late June due to the oil spill.

We had a lOOOOOOOOOOOOng family discussion about it and I felt sure we were going to be safe from the oil until I read the reports today of the oil starting to hit parts of FL and it sounds as though there is no stopping it from hitting the Panhandle now

This is a shame and I hope BP lives up to their promises to compensate all those that are loosing $$$$$$$$$$$ over this disaster

We are now heading to my least favorite destination, Myrtle Beach (actually Garden City) SC. Never fished that area before, spend most of my saltwater time in Charleston SC, so guess it will be knew water to me but sure was looking forward to catching Genuine Reds in the Gulf

why not come to the clearwater area?? oils not going to get in this area for a long time if at all. The loop should keep it away. This kind of thing is gonna kill this state...sad ...very sad!!

Why?

I have reservation at Portofino Resort, Santa Rosa Island, July 26 through August 3.

Have a gaurantee that if the beaches are oiled that I can cancel at no cost. Or If the beaches get dirty after I am there I get a full refund.

We are still on for the same time in Destin. I just can't imagine seeing oil on those sugar white sand beaches

I agree with WHY but it is my only vacation of the year and it kills me to do this but my main reason for going is the white beaches and the fishing.

Trust me I have battled this feeling all night and I honestly thought PCB area would dodge a bullet but it is not looking like it at this point.

I am going to talk with condo owner, we can get a full refund up to 14 days prior to arrival day so that was a factor plus we had to try and find somewhere else to go which I have but do have until tonight to let them know a definite decision .

Damn I was looking forward to fishing for red snapper and different waters for a change

Need some guidance on this from you folks that live in the area, honest opinions not guess.

Trust me we have been there, we have a rental house on Isle of Palms in SC and we lost it during HUGO but that was a little different circumstance

My gut feeling was to just go and roll with the punches, or the oil, and play it by ear but at that time I really did not think it would hit the area. Family has very long faces this am and really does not want to go anywhere else other than maybe Disney World but that kills me to think of that.

Would love to go to the Keys but there is not a lot to do for the non fisherman/kids there so that is out

we have nice white beaches here, great fishing, only one and a half hours from Mickey World, and not a damn chance of any oil coming into this area...Florida has miles and miles of coastline and your gonna skip that with no-threat of oil to 90% of the state??? Knee jerk reaction....

I would imagine you could get a condo on a day's notice.

Actually it is not a city and very few gardens. Maybe he met a pissed off visitor? Had a mobile home for years just behind the seafood store on Hwy 17. Great times there but another ex wife and it had to go.

tprice, we are in Orange Beach, a number of miles west of PCB. No oil,but there's plenty of protective stuff being placed around here. What I think for the next month is:

1. The Feds have just found and released 8200 feet of Burn Boom, about 10x what's out there now. It's been in Alaska and the Feds needed to... authorize themselves... to let BP rent it.

That much Burn Boom will contain and destroy a lot of the oil that's out there; likely a lot of the boom will be combing shoreline oil moving offshore.

2. If this capping attempt is successful, then the amount of oil to contain and destroy with have a finite amount attached to it; making implementation a lot easier to conduct.

Hold tight with PCB. Any condo owner that doesn't give you 100% guarantees can be replaced in a heartbeat. For example, we have a 4BR condo right on the beach and the Pass, and I'm allowing boaters to park their boats or boat trailers at my house for safety if they want to fish while they're here.

You can get a lot of accommodation down here. PCB is a pretty area.

I still think he is pulling the trigger to early.

Look the oil spill is terrible, but the folks that make a living seeing that Mr Price has a good vacation are still their and they need his business. Don't run out on them now, when they need him the most. That's what I am talking about, no smart arse comments, no name calling.

NOW is when folks NEED your business. MY state is being dealt a really bad blow by all the blow hards doing NOTHING except staging a show basically. The marsh and estuaries will take a long time to clean. Our beaches like any other can be scooped up and new sand dregged in very easily, marsh and breading grounds for a huge portion of Gulf fisheries are a different story. That AH from BP who wise cracked when asked about the shrimpers and fishermens losses " Louisiana isn't the ONLY place that has shrimp" really doesn't get it as a huge portion of the seafood all over the coast begins life right here off of our coast and in out marshes.

We are STILL going to OB the end of July.

Charlie, if you need a place to store the boat or boat/trailer, you have a spot on my driveway that's right next to the boat launch and very safe.

We are in the same boat (literally and figuratively)...I refuse to let this be an issue that causes us to cancel our trip the end of this month. If the beach gets so bad that the kids and the admiral can't swim in it, then they can go to the pool and be just as happy.

I was watching the news here in Maryland the other day and they showed the mayor of Destin FL thanking visitors on the beach for coming. If the beaches are closed there are still a lot of things to do in and around Destin and I didn't plan on going fishing. We are still going for few weeks with a cruise out of Mobil in the middle and watch the fireworks on the 4th. The cruise line said that they are able to cruise around the oil for now.

SORRY did not mean to offend anyone and not knocking Garden City but MB is just not high on my list places to go, nothing wrong with it just not what I like keep in mind I am use to the Island pace of Isle of Palms SC and yes I am like you in that tourist get on my nerves too

Just VERY VERY disappointed that I am not going to fish in the GOM, been looking forward to that for all winter

To those that do not understand keep in mind it is MY MONEY TO SPEND as I like, I go to work everyday and it is not a risk the family was willing to take. I am betting since I did this there will be NO OIL PROBLEMS AT ALL in the PCB area trust me this is my luck and it will make me sick.

Just too long of a tow from upstate SC for iffy fishing and this is my main objective when I am on vacation

It was a long hard thought out decision and even today I was still considering going to PCB but lot of reasons we changed locations (trust me sis in law would be miserable in PCB if the oil is in Texas and someone on the internet told her it would make her sick, lover her to death but she is a little odd about stuff like that and not willing to listen to that while on vacation).

I do feel like I am turning my back on people in a time of need but their beef is with BP and not me, they need to put the shoe on the other foot and HONESTLY TELL ME WHAT THEY WOULD DO, HONESTLY

Hopefully this will be cleared up for next year, that part scares me as well. I have already committed to the condo owner for 2011 season to show my support best I can

On another note the condo owner did tell us she has had everyone cancel the month of July & August for them but was expecting it and yes she did offer a money back deal if there was any oil problem at all but did suggest to have a back up plan, problem is with a backup plan you have to make a deposit and commit

Good luck to all on the Gulf Coast and good luck with BP cause I am betting you are gonna need it, they will try and tie this thing up in court and beat people down after everything is said and done. Only the attorneys will come out ahead when all is over
