Default Sinkhole in Guatemala

At least 115 people have died after a tropical storm battered Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador over the weekend, officials in those countries reported.

Guatemala was hit hardest, with at least 92 deaths, 54 people missing and 59 injured, emergency officials said. Nearly 112,000 people have been evacuated and more than 29,000 are living in temporary shelters, Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom said in an address to the nation late Sunday.

The devastation has been widespread throughout Guatemala with mudslides destroying homes and buildings and burying some victims. At least nine rivers have dramatically higher levels and 13 bridges have collapsed, the nation's emergency services said.

In the northern part of Guatemala City, the downpour created a giant sinkhole that swallowed up a space larger than the area of a street intersection. Residents told CNN that a three-story building and a house fell into the hole.

A local newspaper reported that a private security guard was killed when the sinkhole opened up, but authorities had not confirmed the fatality. Residents said that a poor sewage drainage system underground was to blame for the sinkhole. A similar hole opened up nearby last year, they said.

It does look fake, but a very similar one nearby in 2007 was 330 feet deep.

Cave collapse Florida has those(not as big ) occasionally from the underground aquifer cave system.

Sink Hole in Guatemala
http://www.manolith.com/2010/06/01/s...-in-guatemala/

A giant sinkhole gave way in a populated area of the capital city, completely swallowing what has been reported as a three-story building.

Sinkholes are quite common in this world region–a region known for its underground water sources, caves and rivers. Officials believe the 36-plus inches of rain left in the region by Agatha to be the cause of the enormous, 200 ft. sinkhole, but have stated an investigation would follow, once order had been restored.

Thousands have been evacuated from the capital city in the days following the storm, but according to witnesses, there was as least one man who was in the building which was swallowed by the sinkhole.

As you can see in the photo, it looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie. The sink hole is almost perfectly round, and gives way to an extremely large chamber or cave below–resembling a bottomless pit. Guatemala is just another in a long line of recent natural disasters, and what seems to be increased geologic activity. The possibility of subsequent earthquakes and tremors due to Pacaya, has become yet another concern in the wake of Agatha.
