Default Need advice-house training 1 year old dog.

About a month ago I adopted a 1 year old male Basset Hound. He spends his day in laundry room and will not relieve himself. As soon as we let him out after that he will do his business. The problem is when we are home and allow him to roam the house; he will drop a steamer or take a leak sometimes on my kid’s bed. Needless to say my wife and I are hardly impressed, any advice would be appreciated. He is fixed and I have another male dog in the house that does not do this.

Crate the dog unless you are actually interacting or otherwise paying attention to him. If I can't watch my pup (8 months old) she's in the crate. My male didn't get free roam of the house until over a year old. The dog using the bathroom in the house is your fault (sorry ) for not paying attention to what he was up to

Watch Bruce Almighty with Jim Carry. Inside bad outside good inside bad outside good!!

First make sure you use something made to kill the oder of pet urin or he will keep using the area as his restroom. He does not know that its not the correct place, and won't know until you teach him. Use the word Outside when ever you catch him doing it and drag him outside right then and once your outside where you want him to go, praise him even if he does not go potty.

We have house broken all of our dogs within 3-4 days with this method. Don't yell and go crazy on the dog because he does not understand that.... don't scold the dog if you don't catch him doing it because the dog is not going to know what he did wrong. When you get your dog out of his area put a leash on him and take him outside.. no stopping on the way out and let him potty outside. As in when ever you get home, first stop should be to the laundry room leash up the dog and take him outside. Dogs don't want to potty in their bedroom so they will normally hold it until they can get out.. getting out at this point is the rest of your house... Peeing on the kids bed is more than likely marking, or the smell where the kids may have wet the bed at some point and thinks its ok to pee there..

This is an easy fix, just take your time with the dog, and realise that the dog does not know what you want from him yet.

Take him out often so when he does potty outside you can praise him with petting, voice, and if need be a treat. Lots of people say not to reward your dog with treats, but its a great way to open the door of communation between man and dog. Our dogs are happy with praise or treat and that is a good way to have it. They would like that milk bone, but if we pat them on the head and tell them good dog they are just as happy.
