Default Update on the 3 boaters adrift for over 2 days off FL and GA

Just listened to a long section on the local sports talk radio station here in Jax. They went through the whole thing from sinking to rescue. There was a lot of humor but also some stories that made you stop and think.

The station will put in on their on-demand later today. I will grab the link and post it. It is about 45 minutes long though and I don't know if they will take out the commercial breaks.

One story was that Elias got separated from the other two. Then the two heard a voice in the middle of the night and started yelling "Help, Help". The answer back was "You have got to be kidding me." Thinking they were being ignored one shouted back "if you have a flashlight you can find us." The answer back was "if I had a flashlight I wouldn't be out here swimming with you!" And that's how they joined back up with Elias!

They didn't know how far out and north they had gotten so continuously saw land and buildings and beaches which they swam towards, only to find them mirages. A CG helicopter flew over them and back and they reckon the beam of the searchlight was only 30 yards away at one point. They could see fishing boats around them, but miles away.

In the end they were 40 miles north of where they started and 20 miles further out!

A well packed ditch bag that floats should be required. I know we are to have flares etc but most boats go down so quick that they can't unpack the crap to get the safety bag out. They should require it be within reach of the captain at all times.

Ditch bags are as good as your crew is prepared. Talk to the people on your vessel before the boat ever leaves. JMHO Pat
