Default West Marine Price Matching.......Thanks BOE

I know that it has been a topic of conversation here on THT several times before and, I am not attempting to start another round of discussion. I did however want to let folks know that West Marine's price matching policy only goes so far. I decided to buy a Garmin GPSMAP 441s and G2 Vision card. I found the lowest price I could on the web, printed out the information and yesterday went to my local WM. After 4 different folks looked at what I had brought in, one gentleman (manager ?) walked over and told me that he could not match the price as it was less than his (WM) cost. In addition, he would have to charge me shipping and taxes. The end result was that he was still over $70.00 more. I told him that was fine and left, not angry, upset or anything else. After all, I had only wasted about 10 minutes. This morning, I called BOE Marine and they gladly matched the price I found so ordered the Combo and the card. Now I anxiously await my new toy.

This is not so much a poke at WM as it is a Kudos to BOE Marine. This is my first dealing with them and I had heard a lot of good things about them and can say my experience with the nice lady on the phone was very pleasant.

Maybe they've started again (to an extent), but WM stopped price matching on Internet items a long time ago.

No, according to the guy in the store, they do match web prices but, could not do this one as it was less than his cost.

I price compared once, just to have a baseline. If the costs were exactly the same, I'd prefer BOE since I got answers to questions that I would not be able to get from West Marine.

Sure, if I need something in a hurry I'll go local, but I prefer to keep my business with those who seem to know what they are talking about, rather than reward West Marine for employing people who can read the bullet items off an item tag.

Price matching is a double edge sword. It sounds like a good thing at first, but it enables West to charge more than other companies, but only if you find it somewhere cheaper and call them on it you can get the cheaper price. West Marine wins out, since they only have to give a good price to those who shopped around, where the other stores have to give a good price to everyone.

If other places charge lower amounts, why no give the other guy a break and reward them for their competitive pricing?

Not true....I take items printed off Defender's website and they match the price every time. I've done this probably 5-6 times in the last couple of years...they sell the item(s)to me for the price shown on Defender's site every time.

I bought a low end Garmin unit from BOE, but before I did I went to the big San Diego WM store. Punched up the BOE price from their website--385. WM would only come down to 410 or so. If they had matched the 385 I would have bought it even though I would have to pay sales tax. (my own opinion is that the sales tax free internet rules are a bunch of ****, unfair to local merchants who pay taxes and hire people who pay taxes). But 60 bucks difference was too much.

Yeah, they play "catch me if you can!" with their customers...

I highly doubt that the sales price was "below their cost". WM buys in bulk and highly controls their suppliers and bullies them into volume wholesale pricing.

I'm sure their (so-called) manager just didn't want to take a hit on that particular item or that he felt that you would probably roll-over and buy it anyway since you were right there (most others would have).

Kudos to you for sticking to your guns and for the great deal offered by BOE.

I don't expect a local store to eat the sales tax but I thought WM could at least match the price + tax. The only reason i would have bough there was to be able to walk out of the store with it. Hard to believe the price was below his cost. Oh well, I should be getting my new combo unit and Bluechart G2 card any day now. After the rebate, my G2 card will only have cost me $47.50.
