Default Hay soaks up oil - will this work in gulf oil spill?

Check out this video, apparently hay will soak up oil on the surface of the water... if this actually works, instead of paying farmers not to plant crops, we could pay them to grow hay and send it out to the spill site on barges....

Seems worthy of a try.

first off, thats not crude oil. And the stuff floating out there is the heavy nasty stuff they make tar and asphalt out of. What they poured in that water looks like some used refined motor oil. Hay ain't gonna do shit to the chuncky stuff thats out there. Might pick up the sheen but thats about it. Secondly there is a financial incentive for the skimmers to recover the the oil "intact" as its a valuable commodity.

I think the hay and crude would make one hell of a weedline. I think you better release all of your fish though. Maybe they should try kitty litter too. We would only need about a million tons of it.
In all seriousness we need a solution that is focussed more on imediately stopping the flow of oil and less on a fix that still allows the well to be tapped back into easily.

11andy11 is correct - at least about the crude not being motor oil...and I am not sure waves mix as well as the beater used there - regardless,,,

And other comments are in the two other threads on this subject, here:

Lets talk it to death instead of trying it in a small section, that's what the government does.
