Default 2 girls in kayacks found dead

2 Girls 18 and 22 both found dead in 46 degree waterabout 2 - 3 miles off richmond island in Maine . They were paddeling from one island to another a mile or more apart . The winds were reported to be 15 from n.w. but that is not how it felt to me it seemed more like 30 as I rowed in from my mooring . They had lifevests on but it did not help . Richmond island is offshore of Portland .

Extremely sad. My wife and I saw two kayakers mid-afternoon between Cousins and Chebegue where we were sheltered from the worst of the wind but it was still blowing 20+ in there but out in Broad Sound it was more like 30-35 and chilly as hell.
Not a great day to be out there.

Way too young to die.

May god rest their souls...

This happens every spring. Air gets warm.. water stays cold.

Each year there are stories here in the NE of it happening. Canoes and Kayaks are the worst offenders.... I say this all the time to friends and family, Unless you are a proffessional, stay out of these boats until the water is warm enough to swim in comfortably.

Truly sad for those families..Those girls were in shorts and t-shirts.. they never had a chance.

Not trying to scare anyone, but just be careful this time of year please. That water is cold!

Very sad but true. I also see canoers and Kayakers on the sound. People have no idea how fast conditions changeand how dangerous cold water is. Without wetsuits they probably had no chance.
