Different sound is accurate, however I could not identify what the sound was.

Sorry if you are a fan, could have been the worst performance I have ever seen on SNL. It sounded like he had marbles in his mouth.

Well, I gotta' agree on the vocals - kind of a "singin' in the Grand Canyon" sound, along with not enough treble? Maybe a mike problem or trying a new "effect"?

Many times, I'm more into the gitar end of the song vs. the overall sound. I have "every band needs at least 5+ gitars" syndrome!

Yep, not one of his better vocals.

If you can't understand that, then you are not a Tom Petty fan.
That stuff is book'n......just love the way they roll things over. Simple, clean and a lot of what will be a hit.

"I Should Have Known It" WILL be HOT, as my man "Garett" has stated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never understood what people saw in Tom Petty and his band. Personally, I find their music to be bland and boring. Though I do like the song "American Girl", but that's about it. Just a matter of taste of course.

The video that is linked now is a good cut of the song, and very understandable. I saw him on SNL last night, and even with closed captioning turned on, I wasn't sure if he was singing the same song that matched the words on the screen. I too found it painful, and changed channels about halfway through the song. Fell asleep, and haven't seen his second song yet.

Here is a link. If it doesn't work, go to nbc.com and search tom petty snl. The video is a thumbnail halfway down the page. Having heard the cleaner version, it is a little easier to understand. He doesn't look quite as much like Bob Dylan's illegitimate child as usual.

If you can unserstand Bob Dylan you can understand Tom Petty. I have always looked at TP&HB as a solid band. I know I will catch some hell over this but who is out there now that can crank the hits on Rock?

Total aside who would have thought Rap aka Hip Hop would still be here? When you had Soul artist like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zCz8SKmGek

Much better link this time around Bruce.

I used to funk out on the bass guitar back in the later years of school ; our biggest gig was just over 600 people .........sure wish our jam room looked like theirs!!!!!

I still say that's got HIT written all over it!
