Default Targets extended service plan can suck it!!!!

So, I bought this flash drive camcorder in 2/2009, great camera, I loved it! Then october of this year is was giving me problems reading the card....finally get it too work for my sons halloween carnival...that was the last time it worked.....keeps saying no card when there is a card inserted. I tried 3 different cards and the same thing.

I moved and couldn't find the paperwork till this weekend...btw, they said they wouldn't honor it unless I had the paperwork. Anyway, I call today explain the problem and they are so apologetic....then say they'll send out a gift card for the amount I paid. I said I want the camera fixed and they say they won't fix it and that the GC is within the term of the agreement.
I checked the agreement and it does say that they will try to fix it first...but I like my camcorder and most certainly cannot find another for what I paid.

I went to Canons website and without even knowing what the problem is I get an automated quote of $176.00 to repair~$55 more than I paid.....it sounds like there is a well known problem with these cameras FS100's maybe the whole FS series, who knows.

on a positive note....at least I get my monney back!

to replace it will cost me ~300 maybe if I search I can find it for 250....i'm happy about about the refund but why not repair it? and its not quite a refund...its a gc that must be spent at target.....if they want a happy customer then fix or replace my camcorder....I asked the woman "do you think I can find a camcorder for <120.00 and her answer was I work in the corporate office I do not know".......but, even there term&conditions state that the unit will be repaired first then replace if not repaired.

I guess it makes me wonder if there isn't a design/software problem....

Im with the Dr here. You got to use it for almost a year and a half and after that time you got your money back? What a deal. I must be missing your point. Just so you know, Most of the less expensive electronics now days are not repaired because it is not cost effective. If your cell phone stops working 9 times out of 10 you get a replacement. Quit your crying take the money you spent almost 1.5 yrs ago andd another 120.00 and by another camcorder. If your lucky the same thing will happen and you can upgrade again.

getting a farkin gift card to Target ain't the same as getting your money back. The only extended warranty I like is Sams. Its simple to read and understand and they stand behind it.

well, checked out their website and they have a JVC that is similar to my canon...has an 8 GB HD for like 270....I'll see what is in various Targets on clearance in my travels. I guess another option is to just get a dig. camera that when used with the SD card 8GB + can also be a camcorder....

Target's extended warranty has a "clause" that states that they have the option of repairing or refunding the original purchase amount.

Sometimes it is cheaper and/or less hassle for them to just give you your money back. Especially when it is in the form of a Target gift card, which you can only spend at Target...

As usual, they sell extended warranties for an additional source of income. Most things don't fail during the coverage period. And some folks forget that they even purchased an ext warranty. And yet others don't want to deal with the running around that they have to do to have it repaired or replaced.

And Target counts on that...

yeah, ur right....I guess this is one of those times the extended protection helped....I would have beed steaming if I paid the original msrp and didn't have a warranty

what do you guys think? pay the 176 at canon, maybe stae my case and see if they bend a little or send her to ebay for parts....

I hate to say it, but all electronics or most are throwaway, more expensive to repair than to give your money back or at least a portion of it. Even if they did repair it, something else would go wrong with it. A cheap extended warranty on some things actually is a good thing as to consider especially if the item is use most of the time in harms way.

$176.00 for a camcorder? You certainly got what you paid for.
I have an Olympus camera that doesn't recognize the card after I've downloaded the pics. It takes a while of taking it out and re-inserting it for it to work.

If you still have the camera, before you get rid of it, try cleaning the card contacts. It can be done by wrapping an alcohol soaked wet nap around the card and push it in and out a few times. You will have to trim the wet nap, and make sure you use a one that is just alcohol, no lotion. Make sure the batteries are out of the camera, and let it dry for a little while before turning it on. No guarantees, but it has saved one of my cameras.

u see thats the kicker....I really didn't use it much. one long video ~30 minutes of a neighbors huge model train, which my son loved!!!! A few short videos here & pics here and there and I took it out on the boat once, cushioned and double baggied!!! I used it a lot that day I have a few videos up on FB of that day. I didn't go fast and there was no pounding or spray that day! So, wth did it just decide to start giving me problems, idk?!?

no, Canons MSRP was 399, targets retail was 299, I found it on clearance for 149....the lady said if she couldn't find all the accessories she would take another 20% off....she found all the acc.'s and I asked if I could still have the xtra 20% off and she said sure! So, ~120 + 20 for the ESP.....

so yes all things considered i can at least replace it with something....most likely not a video camera.

Target has a JVC for 270 - my 120 +$150 cash extra again not bad considering the jvc does have a 8 gb hd

I will try that...I know I cleaned the contacts on the cards and got nothing....also, last night I tried hooking it up to the PC's USB drive and it still wouldn't record, so i'm at a loss?!?

Let me get this straight, you bought an extended service plan for a $149 camera, from target? Consider yourself lucky they are giving you that. Dont you know extended warranties are usually not worth the paper they are written on?

yes thats right...& no ididn't know the "warranties" were usually useless. I always figured the warranties were there for peace of mind after buying an expensive unit and then, usually, right after the extended warranty expired is when the unit broke.......if it broke.

maybe I should be more clear here....this is my first video camera and second ever digital camera, my first digital camera was expensive, low pixel ratio bought in '03 crappy near useless display but decent pictures.......it still works today....just eats AA's like crazy. So, I really thought this thing would last....I'm definately reconsidering even replacing with another camcorder.....I think I can do as much recording with a dig. camera.

Actually it wasn't worthless, he's getting his money back (sort of). If it was worthless they would have told him to pound sand.
