Default Safe tubing spots, Central FL.

Looking for some safe tubing spots to take my son. Everywhere we seem to go has lots of small boat traffic and if he falls off it would be very easy to miss him in the water. Anybody know of any good safe spots in the Central FL area that are known to be just for tubing?

Central FL is a pretty big place. Where are you located? I could tell you places in from the east side of Orlando to the west side of Groveland, north to Gainesville.

If it helps I always try and take a red flag out with us that they can stuff into their vest, once they fall off if there is any traffic around they wave the flag over their head. It's a big plus to drive appropriately when in high traffic areas so that the rider does not fall off.

Hit the Butler chain up during the week. It gets busy on the weekends. Probably like most lakes with public access though.

Since you are up in the Sanford area, the Mt. Dora chain isn't that far away. It's been a while since we tubed, but we are near the Winter Park chain. It's a zoo during the day, but early and late it's not too bad.

I see people tubing the St. Johns all the time but you wouldn't catch me doing it out there.

The rainbow river near Dunellon, absolutely beautiful and fantastic, trip, The FWC and County, and locals guard it like the white house. Takes about 3-4 hours to do the whole thing. No cans, very little food, and no throwaway anything, all in plastic containers.

29 NORTH, can you tell me a little more about this place. What is the FWC and County mean. Thanks for the info.

I think 29 North is referring to sitting in a tube and floating down the river, not being pulled by a boat.

It's been a long time since I've been to the Rainbow River. Used to camp at a private campground about 20 years ago and go snorkeling at the spring head.

You can launch at mullet lake park on SR 46 East of Sanford. It's not 2 miles from where my signature pic was taken. Renowned skiing due to the bluffs on either side of the river, from Lemon Bluff to Lake Harney. Not as many snakes as past years, as the alligators have eaten them all up....

You got that right. I won't go in the water. The thing is, that part of the river is perfect for skiing. The bluffs block the wind, so the river is glass, and there's not many boats as you are at the extreme southern end of the river. Lake Monroe would be good for tubing, and a mile from shore there is less chance of gators, but it's too choppy to ski. The paradox is, any place that is ideal is going to have other people skiing, which is more dangerous, IMO, than the gators...

Floating on tube, Rainbow river. Being pulled on tube, Lake Tarpon, (North west of Tampa) good sized lake. Or Tsala Apoka lake in Inverness.
