Default Keys vacation, Hawks Cay?

We are looking to do a family vacation this summer in the keys, probably mid to late July. We are considering spending the bulk, if not all of our nights at hawks Cay. Any opinions from those who have done this. Kids are 11 & 14. Both enjoy the beach, swimming and watersports. One loves to fish, the other tolerates fishing as long as the fish are biting. Fishing isn't going to be a priority as we can do that every day at home. Probably try to sneak in a half day backcountry trip while there.

Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated.

Airslot,

My wife and I spent three nights at Hawks Cay about a month ago. Overall it was a very nice resort, we didnt have the kids with us and it was a little too busy for us, being that we were alone. The only thing I didnt like was the cost of drinks/food. There are limited options for meals, but the marina has a neat seafood place that gets packed early. Overall it was great, but we had just come from 3 nights in Key West and were looking for peace and quiet. Your kids will love it.

There are other fine options for food not too far away in Islamorada and Marathon.

I have not stayed a Hawks Cay but it looks nice enough. I would consider renting a boat, there just isnt much to do in the keys without one IMO, especially in July when it is pretty darn hot.

My wife and I stayed here last year http://www.tranquilitybay.com/.
We thought it was very nice. We had a 2 bd, 2 bth town home. We did not do any fishing. Our days were either snorkeling at Looe Key (3 days) or at the pool which is HUGE. The only thing we should have done is driven the few miles to Hawks Cay to rent a boat. We did have reservations at HC for the end of June but had to cancel the trip.

Hawks Cay is a good place to stay especially with kids that age.

Been to Hawks Cay a couple times, love it there, plenty to keep the kids busy. Also recommend the townhouses, some have private hot tubs on the deck. It is a bit pricey though. Drive to Islamorada or Marathon for more dining options.

We were just there with kids, 2/4/5 yo, and had a ball. Daycamp for the kids, 4-5 pools, and a slip out back for the boat. We booked again for August.

Eat meals in Marathon, the restaurant on resort was weak. Your kids can sign up to swim with the dolphins. There are guides right there and they seemed good.

Have fun.

Our favorite place to stay. Great with kids, private adult pool also to get away alittle if needed. A quick run to the Long Key bridge for some great fishing.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. The trip is a sure thing, but wife is now looking at renting a house in Islamorada. See y'all down there July 17th, staying somewhere?

You can fly into Marathon. Not sure about regular carriers, but there is a nice airport there...

I personally think your better off flying into Fort Lauderdale and driving the 2.5 hours. We did that last year. Car rental is right across the street and getting in and out was better than Miami

Hope you get there before the oil. Word today is that the plume has reached the loop current which will carry it down around the tip of Fla. Gonna be bad. Very, very bad.

That is our usual MO. Miami sucks, Ft L. is a nice airport.
