Default Tsukiji Fish Market - Tokyo

I was just in Tokyo last week and I went to the auction at the Tsukiji fish market. It's kind of depressing to see that many fish lined up knowing they do this every day. It's actually only closed the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. I know this because I stayed up drinking all night on Tuesday so I could get there early. Showed up at 4:45 am and there was nobody there. I went back the next morning. Here are some pics:

Warehouse full of tuna being auctioned:

One of the many aisles in the market:

Lots of BFT:

Fugu:

Here are a couple videos:

Auctions:

Butchering:

Fugu:

Unrelated, but this is a really cool beer machine in the JAL lounge:

The rest of my pics are here:

Saw that market back in the mid 80's .... the variety of stuff those folks pull out of the ocean and eat is almost terrifying.

Nice pics. I have never been able to drag myself out of bed early enough to visit the market when I am there.

It's worth it to see. I don't need to do it again, but I'm glad I got to see it.

Is Fugu that fish that you eat while it's still kind of "live and moving"?? I think you have to be licensed to cut it because the wrong meat of the fish can kill you.

I don't know if it's still moving, but yes, only licensed chefs can prepare it since portions of it are poisonous.
